From our earliest beginnings as the steward of Grady Memorial Hospital to our evolution as a driving force for equitable access and innovative health solutions, the FDHA remains anchored in its mission to ensure that all residents have access to quality healthcare and the opportunity to live a healthy and productive life.
As we honor the milestones that shaped our past, we are equally focused on the work ahead, strengthening partnerships, championing health equity, and advancing community-centered strategies that ensure every resident has the opportunity to thrive.

| | Unveiling Our Story: A Mural Celebrating 85 Years of Progress, Innovation, and Community Impact | | |
More than a work of art, FDHA's new mural brings our story to life. As we celebrate 85 years of service, stewardship, and partnership, this vibrant piece honors the communities that have always been at the heart of our mission. For eight and a half decades, the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority has worked to advance healthcare access for residents of Fulton and DeKalb counties by helping bridge gaps, remove barriers, and connect people to critical resources that support healthier lives.
To commemorate this enduring impact, we set out to tell the story of our organization and, more importantly, the people and communities we serve. The result is a one-of-a-kind mural created exclusively for the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority. Professionally hand-drawn and hand-painted, every line, brushstroke, and detail was crafted with intention, capturing the spirit, resilience, and diversity of our communities while reflecting a shared vision of health, opportunity, and well-being for all.
The mural serves as both a tribute to our past and a symbol of the future we are building together. It celebrates 85 years of progress, innovation, and collaboration, standing as a colorful reminder of how far we have come and the lasting impact we can achieve when we work together in service of our communities.
| | From Founding to Future: The Journey of FDHA | | |
Since its founding, the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority (FDHA) has played a vital role in safeguarding access to healthcare for residents of Fulton and DeKalb counties. Established under Georgia’s Hospital Authorities Law, FDHA was designed to serve as a steward of public healthcare assets—most notably Grady Memorial Hospital—while ensuring accountability, financial oversight, and regulatory compliance.
Over time, FDHA’s journey has been marked by reflection, learning, and growth. Recent years prompted a renewed focus on clearly defining its responsibilities, strengthening internal operations, and reimagining its place within an increasingly complex healthcare landscape. This evolution has positioned FDHA not only as a protector of assets, but as an organization ready to lead with purpose, adaptability, and vision.
| | How Our Past Shapes Our Mission Today | | |
FDHA’s mission today is rooted in lessons learned from its past. Early organizational efforts centered on clearly understanding and fulfilling legal and fiduciary obligations to the counties and to Grady. This foundational work clarified that oversight, stewardship, and support are not competing responsibilities, but interconnected elements of a shared goal: improving health outcomes for all.
Grounded in this understanding, FDHA now embraces a mission driven by collaboration and innovation. By aligning closely with Grady Health System and responding to community-identified needs, FDHA has expanded its definition of health to include physical, mental, and social well-being—recognizing that true access to care often extends beyond hospital walls.
| | The Evolution of FDHA’s Role in Regional Healthcare | |
Equitable Access o Care
Establishment: The FDHA was established to oversee the operations of Grady Memorial Hospital and other healthcare facilities in Fulton and DeKalb counties.
Healthcare Access: It has served as a steward of access to quality prevention and care services, addressing unmet health needs for residents.
Collaboration: The FDHA collaborates with community partners to improve health outcomes and ensure health equity for all residents.
Innovative Practices: It employs innovative practices and systems-level interventions to enhance healthcare delivery and address health disparities.
The FDHA’s role in regional healthcare has evolved alongside changing community needs and broader system challenges. Once defined primarily by ownership and oversight, the Authority has grown into a strategic partner within the Fulton-DeKalb health ecosystem—supporting Grady, engaging community stakeholders, and addressing social determinants of health.
Today, FDHA serves as a convener, facilitator, and strategic investor, leveraging its unique position to bring together healthcare providers, community organizations, and public leaders. This shift toward a systems-thinking approach reflects an understanding that sustainable health outcomes require coordination, innovation, and shared accountability across sectors.

A Vision for Healthier Lives, Greater Wellness, and Longer Life Expectancy
The accomplishments of our 85 years of service reflect our longstanding commitment at the FDHA to improving health outcomes across Fulton and DeKalb counties. Today, they serve as the foundation for our strategic vision and the work we lead to advance health equity and community well-being.
Through our 2026-2029 Strategic Plan, we are focused on strengthening organizational capacity, deepening stakeholder engagement, advancing innovative solutions, and maximizing community assets. These priorities guide how we serve as responsible stewards and catalysts for lasting impact.
At the center of this work is the 5 in 10 Community Health Initiative, our bold commitment to mobilizing collective action to increase life expectancy by five years over ten years in communities disproportionately affected by health disparities. By bringing together healthcare, public health, and community partners, we are addressing the factors that shape health beyond healthcare and creating the conditions for people to live longer, healthier lives.
As we look ahead, we remain committed to developing innovative, collaborative solutions that improve quality of life, expand opportunity, and build healthier futures for generations to come.
