Hello everyone

Well I made it out of hospital just in time to enjoy our Bettws Triangle Music and Arts Festival 2022. It was frustrating not being here for the run up to this event to help with the organising, but we just had to hope that everyone would turn up at the right time to perform and that there would be enough of an audience at each venue. The overall feeling was that it was a success and although there are some aspects which need ironing out, we plan to continue next year with another event.

The dates for your diaries are 16/17/18 June 2023.

'Activating the Surface'

6/13/20 September and then two weeks later on 4 October at 4-6pm.

The aim of this workshop is to build up vibrant, detailed surfaces with depth, using a variety of techniques, building up effects gradually and responding to whatever works best. We shall use the most expressive and unexpected ideas to develop into stitched pieces.

'Chasing Shadows and Reflections'

5 dates 8/15/22 September, 13/27 October from approx 4.00 to 6.00

Working with a range of opaque and semi-transparent papers and fabrics we will use mono-type printing to explore positive and negative prints, after- images and layering. We will investigate stitch both as a printing surface and in experimental shadow work using hand or machine stitch.

'Between the Lines'

An introductory session on Monday 19th September at 5.00pm

Two full days 26th/27th September 10.00 to 4.00

During this busy two-day you will investigate ‘Line’ through a series of design and stitch exercises, and develop ways of working with papers, paints, fabrics and threads to explore this essential element. Experiment with ink, collage paper and cloth backgrounds, and then embellish these with linear marks in print, hand embroidery and/or machine stitch.

The emphasis will be placed on making lots of small samples to fill a sketchbook which can be used as an aide memoire for future work, but there will also be scope to make a larger composition if preferred.

'Colour, Presence and Depth'

I was desperately sorry to have missed Alex's course a couple of weeks ago. It was her first visit to Moor Hall and I knew she was going to be delivering a well thought out drawing and painting course which I would have loved to have done. I shall just have to have her back again!!!!

'DECORATIVE GRIDS AND BORDER PATTERNS'

1st and 2nd August 2022

A lovely opportunity to sit and stitch and be immersed in all of Dorothy's knowledge, and surrounded by her samples from India where she spent her childhood

With traditional and contemporary examples as your source of inspiration you will begin by layering together cotton fabrics to create a cloth which is colourful, soft and lovely to handle (approximately A4 in size) Then using running stitch to build grids, in a voyage of discovery and invention we will begin to explore decorative border patterns. Finally, we will enjoy quilting any remaining areas with the rippling textures unique to kantha.

The workshop is open to everyone who enjoys hand stitching. It could offer you an introduction to kantha making, another chance to extend your kantha making skills or repertoire of stitches.

Sally Jennings is a Northleach-based textile artist who, among other subjects, draws on the natural and cultural life of Zimbabwe, where she grew up. She works in silks, linens and other natural fibres which she painstakingly dyes herself, layering materials and achieving textures which can be dense, three-dimensional or ephemeral. Her colours sing with subtlety and sometimes startle with their vibrancy. Sally’s work is many layered in every sense, and one of the inspirational motifs is her photograph of young Zimbabweans dancing in the the dust. These figures movingly evoke early Bushmen paintings as well as the spirit world of Zimbabwean culture.
