Cancer Center Launches Early Detection Project to Arrest Cancer Before it Spreads

UC San Francisco is embarking on a bold initiative to catch cancer in its earliest forms and prevent it from progressing. Led by Margaret Tempero, MD, the new Cancer Early Detection and Interception initiative aims to detect and halt cancer before it takes root and spreads, potentially reducing the often-severe toll of the disease. Ajay Maker, MD, FACS, FSSO has been appointed to the position of Surgeon in Chief for the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Learn more.


Nynikka Palmer, DrPH, MPH was elected vice president of research for the Academy of Communication in Healthcare. 


Jaysón Davidson was named among the first cohort of Upstream Research Scholars.


Larry Fong, MD, Rahul Aggarwal, MD, and Michael Evans, PhD were awarded a grant from the National Cancer Institute for a project, “Combining immunotherapy with molecularly targeted radiation therapy.”


Elad Ziv, MD was awarded a grant from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project, “Evaluating the clinical implications for ACKR1/DARC associated neutropenia.” 


Philip T. Pauerstein, MD, PhD, with his sponsor Wendell A. Lim, PhD, received a Damon Runyon–St. Jude Pediatric Cancer Research Fellowship. Learn more.


Alameda Health Systems Foundation, in collaboration with UCSF and Umoja Health, received a Gilead Toward Health Equity Oncology Grant (THE Oncology Grant).

Community Engagement

The HDFCCC Office of Community Engagement, in collaboration with Oakland Unified School District's Life Academy High School, recently participated in a health careers fair. Our community health educators talked with students about how health educators spread cancer prevention and screening information, and resources so that our communities can be informed and healthy. Engagement methods included lecture, discussion, visual aids, and the game Kahoot to reinforce cancer education content.
