IT’S FINALLY HERE, the 2023 TCD Spring season has begun!! Sunday, February 19th , Mixed Tennis kicked off with beautiful weather and packed courts! YEE HAW!
I wish I could say the same thing for our Ladies Tournament held on Thursday, February 16th . Was it cold? YES! Was it windy, YES! Did almost 1,100 women turn out to play? YES, YES, YES!!! A HUGE THANK YOU and JOB WELL DONE, to Rita Kessler, who is our NEW Tournament Task Force Chair! Rita did an amazing job for her first time! To be the Tournament Task Force Chair is an arduous job with so many moving parts that start immediately after they take office, which is when? You guessed it…..early December. What month is probably the busiest month for women? You guessed it…..December! Rita really handled the learning curve with zest, and everyone had a GREAT TIME
as a result, despite the weather! Another THANK YOU to all the Site Coordinators that also braved the frigid temps to ensure all went smoothly at the 23 facility sites. We truly APPRECIATE YOU!!
TCD has been busy with registration, THANK YOU Placement Task Force Chairs, Monica Goldberg (tennis) and Teresa Risley (pickleball) along with our Web Master, Sue Deeke who creates the schedule (BY HAND!). We now have 729 teams within our 6 leagues! WOW!! That’s history making folks! All done by volunteers who donate their most precious asset……their TIME! If you ever want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes, please contact myself or any other Board Member, we’d LOVE to share and perhaps YOU may be the next Site Coordinator, Flight Coordinator or Board Member! It takes a village, and we couldn’t make TCD the success it is without YOU!
We wish you the very best for a FUN, RAIN FREE season filled with good line calls, great sportsmanship, and new friends. Please remember how lucky we are to be outside with the sun on our backs, playing the sport we LOVE with all the friends we’ve made along the way.

Happy February, it’s time to get this season started!
Thanks to the many volunteers in Placement and Scheduling, we have all Ladies teams flighted and schedules in place. Match times are now available on the website. Players, please let your captains know your eligibility to help them plan for the season.
We have a wonderful team of Flight Coordinators ready to help our captains with their work. Their contact information can be found on your team page under the roster names. Captains, please remember to reach out to the captains of visiting teams a few days before you play to welcome them and pass along any information about your facility that can help the travelling teams.
I look forward to a fun, rain-free season ahead. Remember the Player Add deadline is March 21st . Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

The Spring ‘23 Season starts this week! The Placement Committee, the TCD Board of Directors, our Website Administrator Sue Deeke, and team captains have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure that everything is set to have a successful and fun season!
I know y’all have been practicing hard, and can’t wait to wear those cute new uniforms, but remember that SPORTSMANSHIP is the key to a great season! Be sure to read the rules, and print out a copy to keep in your tennis bag.
Remember to take some fun pictures on opening day, and post on Facebook TCD Members Forum!
Cheers to a great season!!

The Spring Mixed Doubles Season is underway with our first matches completed on Sunday February 19th! I’m very excited to welcome 14 New teams to TCD Mixed – it’s fantastic to see Mixed Tennis growing so fast! We have an awesome group of Flight Coordinators to help you through the season – hopefully they’ve reached out to the Captains and Co-Captains to introduce themselves and made you aware of key dates. Flight Coordinators are the Captains' first point of contact and such a huge part of the TCD Team – they do so much to make TCD successful, so Captains be sure to get to know yours! Also Captains, please make sure you are very familiar with all the rules,
especially in regards to entering scores and rescheduling matches. The rule book lays out the circumstances where a match can or should be rescheduled, and the rules and reports you need to follow to complete the reschedule. Most importantly – have fun, get to know some new people, and enjoy being outdoors playing this great sport!

All the fun and excitement of the season begins Friday, February 24. It’s important for all players to read (reread) the Rules before the season starts as they are periodically tweaked from time to time. Captains may even want to print a copy of the Rules for their players to reference during matches.
Indoor courts are now approved for play should Rain or Extreme Weather Conditions exist and both captains agree. No surfaces with gym floors will be allowed. Only courts following USA Pickleball approved guidelines with permanently painted lines and approved nets are allowed. Official indoor pickleball balls are required. Further explanation can be found on our website, click on Rules tab, ARTICLE IV, A.4.
USA Pickleball has new rule changes for 2023, most importantly a no-spin serve rule. If the server spins the ball as its released from their hand either in a drop or volley serve, the receiver may ask for a re-serve before the ball is returned.
As a reminder, TCD does not recognize Spring Break for any of its leagues. Captains must provide at least 1 line of play for a scheduled match or may incur severe penalties. Also, there are no “Significant Tournaments” recognized this season. Tournaments previously approved for rescheduling have been moved to after our season ends.
Wishing you all a fun-filled season with sunny skies.

It’s finally here! We are days away from the Spring season and I’m hopeful you are as excited as I am.
I would like to thank everyone who attended the Membership Meeting on February 9th. We had a great Q & A session after we discussed the rules and other concerns.
The new rule regarding the NO BYE week for Spring Break drew some feedback.
The rule reads as follows:
NO BYE Week for Spring Break. A Team is required to play at least one line to avoid the penalty of being disqualified for the current season and possibly be barred from playing in the following season. (Article V. #4 a)
Some voiced that they might have difficulty in sending a line during that week. We explained that our primary consideration in making this rule was based on fairness to as many members as possible. We are hopeful that this heads up will allow teams to plan ahead and make any adjustments because this rule is non-negotiable.
These are some suggestions that may be helpful:
- Start the conversation NOW regarding the availability of your team members during Spring Break.
- Consider adding players to your team before the Player Add deadline . The deadline can be found on the calendar of each league on the website.
- Teams, please put forth your best effort to field one line. Teamwork is strongly encouraged.
I’m hopeful that this new rule doesn’t dampen your excitement about the upcoming season.
Have a great season & make sure you have fun!

TCD FINANCIALS
The TCD Board works diligently to promote enjoyable recreational tennis and pickleball leagues while maintaining the dues to $15 per season per player. The $15 dues have not increased in over 20 years, making it one of the best “bang for your buck” sports leagues in the DFW metroplex. Below is a breakdown of the 2022 TCD expenditures:
|
|
TCD had four tennis leagues and two pickleball leagues in 2022. We also sponsored pre-season spring and fall tournaments for the Ladies and Mixed tennis leagues. Although the Ladies spring tournament was cancelled due to another winter freeze, those who signed up received a tournament gift. Flight winners for the other tournaments received prizes as well. TCD also hosted two end-of-season events, the Ladies Bootcamp in the spring and a breakfast and tour at the Dallas Arboretum in the fall. TCD also gives grants to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations whose missions include promoting tennis or pickleball development, participation, or education; child-related betterment; women’s health initiatives; or supports or promotes the memory, image, and personality of Maureen “Little Mo” Connolly Brinker. Applications were accepted through
January 31, 2023, and the grants to selected applicants will be distributed the end of February 2023.
