Millions of people have no safe, clean drinking water, many of them living in sub-Saharan Africa. Christ Lutheran began funding water wells in Ethiopia in 2014 and in 2018 raised funds to dig an additional six wells. On January 13th Pastor Mark presented a check for $30,000 to Susanne Wilson, Executive Director of Austin-based Water To Thrive, the nonprofit organization that manages the well digging program. Water To Thrive, in ten years of existence, has placed more than 960 water wells in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. These wells have benefited more than a half-million people, reducing disease and freeing women and children from daily water-collecting to give time for work and school. Christ Lutheran has now funded a total of 18 wells as part of their mission outreach.

ANNUAL PANCAKE SUPPER
Men in Mission will again flip those flapjacks on Tuesday, March 5th , to celebrate Fat Tuesday and raise money for our Rise Against Hunger meal packaging project. Watch the bulletin and worship announcements for exact times that hot pancakes and sausage will be served in the Fellowship Hall. Free will donations encouraged to raise the $3500 we need to fund the Rise Against Hunger event.
RISE AGAINST HUNGER
The 10,000+ meals you helped pack last September are already on their way to hungry orphans. Our meal packages are bound for Jeremie, Haiti for an orphanage operated by Hopestart International. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere and Jeremie, the site of the orphanage, was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, destroying the recent infrastructure improvements meant to bring the region into the 21st century. The meals you packed joined another 200,000+ meals in this shipment that went out in early January. We’ll do this again on God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday, so mark your calendars for September 8th and plan on moving to Catherine’s great music tracks and let’s fill another 10,000+ packages with nutritious rice, soy, veggies and vitamins.
QUILTING BEE
Our Old Fashion Quilting Bee is coming back...on Sunday, February 10th . Everyone is invited to join in with cutting and tying the colorful quilts the ladies have pieced together for Lutheran World Relief. Come be a part of this ministry and make something that will be sent with love to folks living in poverty, church hospitals and refugee programs around the world. We Lutherans are famous for following Jesus’ command to care for the less fortunate, so do something extremely Lutheran and join us making quilts in the Fellowship Hall that Sunday afternoon.

CHRIST LUTHERAN DAY SCHOOL
This month I want to highlight our Godly Play program, led by Kandi Elliott. With Sharon Schwartz assisting, Kandi offers Bible stories to our 3’s through Pre-k age children, in the Godly Play classroom in the educational wing of the church.

Godly Play is the use of beautiful storytelling materials, to reveal God in a meaningful way. It is a creative, imaginative approach to faith formation. Kandi and Sharon have completed extensive training to deliver experiences that encourage wonder about God.

After having a story from the Bible presented in a focused and thought-provoking way, children have the opportunity to manipulate materials from the presentation and other work stations for themselves. These kinds of hands on experiences lend a deep and meaningful understanding of the lesson. We are blessed to have these resources and teachers trained to use them.

There are still story sets that we would love to have, including a story for Valentine’s Day and others. If you would like to contribute toward the purchase of a set, please let us know. We would very much appreciate the opportunity to grow this important part of our program. These materials are also used for Wiggle & Worship and on occasion, for confirmation lessons as well.

Blessings,
Ginny Gaskamp
