A monthly publication of
Plum Creek Christian Church

Begins February 10th
In a world full of bad news, it’s great to run across some good news, isn’t it? The word “Gospel” literally means good news. In the Bible, the Gospel is all about the freedom that comes only through Jesus Christ. It’s about being set free from our past and set free from the burden of trying to fix our own lives. Join us as we take a journey through the book of Galatians, which explains how the Gospel of Jesus is the best news we will ever hear.

And this year's SuperStart! is about conquering Gargantor - the biggest obstacles that keep us from sharing the stories of God's work in our lives. By helping preteens conquer those obstacles, SuperStart will help them become a force unhindered in sharing the amazing things God does. I’ve been wrestling with a question lately. It’s one of the most important questions we all face, but surprisingly, it’s easy to go through life without thinking about the answer. The question is, “Why?”

Why do I get out of bed in the morning? Why do I go to work? Why do I want to do a great job? Why do I relate to my family, friends, or others in the way that I do? In other words, what is my motivation for everything I do in life? Like I said, we don’t always stop to ask these questions. When we do, though, we tend to discover some important truths. For instance, we may find out that we’re doing some things just out of habit, and we don’t have a great reason to do them anymore. We may also find out that we’re doing some “good” things for “bad” or selfish reasons.

In a recent staff meeting, I asked everyone to answer this question: “Why do you want Plum Creek to be a great church?” It goes without saying that we all want to see Plum Creek thriving, but why do we want that? Is it because we want what God wants, or is it for personal reasons that may not be completely in line with God’s will? It’s pretty important to be clear on that, don’t you think?

Well, in my own wrestling with this question, I’ve been looking at 2 Corinthians chapter 5.
In that chapter, the Apostle Paul talks a lot about why he does what he does, and it’s very enlightening. I’ll give you just a few examples. Verse 9: “We make it our goal to please Him…” Verse 14: “For Christ’s love compels us…” Verse 18: God “gave us the ministry of reconciliation…” Do you see what I mean? Paul was driven to please God versus pleasing people. Paul was full of the love of Christ, and that love motivated him to pursue his ministry with a singular passion. Paul understood that he had a God-given calling of reconciling people to God, helping lost people come home to Jesus.

I could give more examples, but those three are enough to inspire me! These are great answers to the why questions we face, both in the church and in life! Why do we care about leading people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus? Hopefully, it’s because we want to please God, and we’re truly compelled by the love of Christ, and we understand that we too have a calling to reconcile people to God. So, I’m doing a heart check today, and I encourage you to do the same. Let’s learn to do what God wants us to do, not for personal or selfish reasons, but for His reasons!
