The Mega-Delta Programme, led by the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research of East China Normal University and rely on the Future Earth Coasts International Project, intends to build up a comprehensive picture of delta dynamics to inform human development, and conservation strategies.

The First Workshop of the UN Ocean Decade "Mega-Delta Programme" was successfully held on August 13!

On August 13, the 1st Mega-Delta Programme Workshop was held, with 26 scientists from more than ten countries participated online, including the members from Future Earth Coasts (FEC) Executive Committee. Miss Chloe Nunn from IOC-UNESCO also joined this workshop on behalf of the Ocean Decade Team.
Professor Xiuzhen Li from the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC) made a brief introduction about the background of the Mega-Delta Programme, the partners, the locations of the deltas, and welcomed all the participants. The Implementation Plan for the Mega-Delta Programme was warmly discussed, including Aims, Research Objectives, Work Plan for the Next Ten Years and Activities in the First Two Years. They all showed confidence in carrying out the Mega-Delta Programme successfully, and looked forward to work together for solutions to common problems faced by world deltas.

Rebuilding Coral Reefs: A Decadal Grand Challenge

Organized under the auspices of the International Coral Reef Symposium 2021 by Future Earth Coasts, and partners including the International Coral Reef Society, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, UN Environment Programme, ICRI, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Kellner & Stoll Foundation for Climate and Environment. The International Coral Reef Society (ICRS) assembled a team of experts to highlight the urgency of taking action to conserve and restore reefs through protection and management measures. This effort culminated in the creation of a paper titled “Rebuilding Coral Reefs: A Decadal Grand Challenge” which provides a summary of the most relevant and recent natural and social science findings and their implications for the numerous discussions and negotiations taking place at the global level.
This event brought together scientists and policy actors to discuss the paper and how it can support governments as they prepare for key negotiations on the dual crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss. See a recording of the event here, and view the paper here.

Sustainable Oceans and Coasts National Strategy 2021-2030 - Australia

This strategy represents a cross-sectoral plan for achieving sustainable oceans and coasts across Australia by 2030. It provides a thoughtful and innovative way forward for our federal and state governments and other leaders across the nation, as well as a roadmap for implementing our shared vision for the future of oceans and coasts.
This strategy provides seven recommendations intended to illuminate support systems in achieving sustainable oceans and coasts. Alongside these recommendations, we list tangible actions that can be taken in achieving these, ideas for the design and implementation phases of these actions, and further ideas relating to the monitoring and evaluation of the successes or learning opportunities that arise. We offer insights on anticipated outcomes, and we detail who is responsible for delivering each of these activities. Leaders from all sectors must play an active role in achieving sustainable oceans and coasts for Australia.
