Happy January everyone!


As we step into 2025, I want to ask: What are your family engagement goals this year?

In this field, opportunities to learn seem endless—webinars, workshops, blogs, and more, offered by organizations with valuable resources. Amid all this activity, it’s worth pausing to reflect on something essential that the Family Engagement in Research Training Program emphasizes: the importance of building a support community.

Whether you’re a person with lived experience who partners in research or a researcher seeking guidance for more meaningful family engagement, having a network to lean on can make all the difference. That’s why I encourage you to take one intentional step this year: reach out to someone who shares your commitment to this work.

It could be a quick email, a Zoom or Teams meeting, or even an in-person chat over coffee. Make the time to connect. When we invest in relationships, we empower ourselves and each other to grow, learn, and create lasting impact.

Here’s to a year of meaningful connections and strengthened communities.

Defining the Scope:Developing Mindful Lived Experience Partnerships for Health Research Ecosystems in an Era of Misinformation 🌟

Many people are familiar with the term 'practicing within scope,' which refers to the services, knowledge, skills, and expertise specific to a particular role. But how do we define the scope of practice for research partners, especially in an era of widespread misinformation?

​Join Rae Martens, Knowledge Broker for the FER Training Program, for a discussion on empowering health research partners as brokers of knowledge within the scope of their lived experience. Rae will also explore how researchers and clinicians can support and empower these partners to build their skills in understanding the research process as they start out as partners in this complex world.

Congratulations to Rae Martens 🌟

Our FER Training Program Knowledge Broker Rae Martens was recently appointed to the CIHR IHDCYH (Canadian Institutes of Health Research Human Development, Child and Youth Health) Institute Advisory Board. Board members act in an advisory capacity to the Scientific Directors of the Institutes with respect to the full range of Institute activities. These activities include deliberations on Institute health research priorities and strategies and implementation plans for engaging the broader research community.

We are looking for a person who thrives on building authentic and meaningful relationships, with proven experience in executing impactful engagement strategies; someone focused on advancing how we listen to our community and improve the quality of research, education and care provided at SickKids.

Award Categories:

  2. Honours trainees who have shown exceptional commitment and active participation in KBHN’s activities and network initiatives.
  3. Outstanding KBHN Promising Researcher Award
  4. Recognizes early-career researchers who have demonstrated significant potential and contribution to advancing research on neurodevelopmental disabilities.
  5. Outstanding KBHN Mentor/Supervisor Award
  6. Celebrates individuals who inspire, guide, and support the development of trainees, fostering an inclusive and dynamic learning environment.

The Patient Perspective: Barriers and Facilitators to Patient Partnership in Research 🌟

February 5, 2025, 5:30-7pm EST

The webinar series is all about patient engagement in health research, also known as patient and public involvement (UK) or consumer involvement (Australia). It is worth mentioning that ‘patient engagement’ in health research is distinctly different from signing up to be a research participant. Taking part in a study as a participant (for example trying a new treatment or management program) can be a great way to help advance healthcare, but the role would not generally include giving input into the research study itself. Panel features Francine Buchanan who is an FER course graduate.

Working with each other and our communities: Co-creating meaningful relationships in research projects 🌟

January 20, 2025, 2-3pm EST

Join 2022 Training Innovation Fund awardees Rosslynn Zulla (University of Calgary) and Andrea MacLeod (University of Alberta) on January 20 from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m.-1 p.m. MT for an interactive webinar on building meaningful research partnerships with immigrant and refugee families who have neurodivergent children, as well as with the organizations that support them. 

This CHILD-BRIGHT event aims to provide practical tools and key information to researchers hoping to forge relationships with these communities, whose members often face multiple barriers preventing their participation in research projects. Rosslyn and Andrea will discuss case studies and present a guide specially developed to support researchers wishing to improve the health and well-being of immigrant and refugee families with neurodivergent children. They will also outline key processes to help researchers align with the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as examples of meaningful research processes and products.

Last year, we defined patient engagement and committed to embedding patient experience into Canada’s health care system. This year must be about brave, authentic, and meaningful alliances that bring these ideas to life.
