about her dad

the great Ernie Fields ---

Going Back to T-Town: The Ernie Fields Territory Big Band by Carmen Fields

The University of Oklahoma Press, June 2023

There was a time when countless young people in the Midwest, South, and Southwest went to dances and stage shows to hear a territory band play. Territory bands traveled from town to town, performing jazz and swing music, and Tulsa-based musician Ernie Fields (1904–97) led one of the best. In Going Back to T-Town, Ernie’s daughter, Carmen Fields, tells a story of success, disappointment, and perseverance extending from the early jazz era to the 1960s. This is an enlightening account of how this talented musician and businessman navigated the hurdles of racial segregation during the Jim Crow era.

Creating a lineup and designing postcards to get the word out!

The Festival is in it's 33rd year started by D.C. Minnner and Selby Minner in 1991. D.C was born on the place in 1935. He was raised there in his Grand mother Lura's Grocery Store/ corn whiskey house and Dance Hall. She took a leap of faith that she made the right decision on how she made her income, and when D.C. was inducted into the OKK Jazz Hall of Fame here in Tulsa in 1999 D.C. felt he had proved she was right. A few years later the Rentiesville High School Reunion Committee gave her an award which praised her Community Leadership and teaching of "Village Unity". she was a social center after school for the kids before her customers arrived.
