GRATEFUL

Many people in my neck of the woods complain about November: it's dark, rainy, cold and dismal. The Wuthering Heights lover in me loves it for those reasons. It's a time to get cozy and perhaps take a breather after our crazy summer/fall. This month we have the National Writers Series: Kyle Mills, the Iceman Cometh bicycle race, Toast the Season, A Conversation with Dean Strang, the Traverse City Children's Book Festival, and my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving!! Thank you for supporting us these last 21 years.

Timelapse

This is one of the most amazing websites I've seen in a while. Have you ever wondered how climate change and human evolution has changed the world over the past three decades? Well, TIME magazine and Google in collaboration built this amazing Timelapse of Columbia Glaciers, Amazon Forests, Dubai and Las Vegas; captured through three decades of Satellite Photography.

Fresh Coast Chocolate

Fresh Coast Chocolate (formerly Just Good Chocolate) has a new cafe and production facility in downtown Traverse City's Warehouse District. Owner Nichole Warner and her team craft chocolate made in small batches with organically-grown cacao and cane sugar from around the world. They source beans from farmers who not only take great pride in growing quality cacao, but who are stewards of the land and working to preserve the tradition of cacao farming for future generations.

The new cafe is at 221 Garland St, TC and you can check them out here.

Daredevil

My love for the Marvel Cinematic Universe knows no bounds, and this series is excellent. It follows Matt Murdock, attorney by day and vigilante by night. Blinded by an accident as a child, Murdock uses his heightened senses as Daredevil, fighting crime on the streets of New York after the sun goes down. His efforts are not welcomed by powerful businessman Wilson Fisk -- AKA Kingpin -- and others whose interests collide with Daredevil's. Though Murdock's day job suggests a man who believes in the criminal justice system, his alter ego proves otherwise, as he takes the law into his own hands to protect his Hell's Kitchen neighborhood and the surrounding city.

Both Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix

Go Plant-Based for Thanksgiving

While it may not be your idea of 'traditional', it's well recognized that a plant-based diet has the least environmental impact.

In fact, the United Nations believes that a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, poverty and the worst impacts of climate change.

While turkey is by no means the worst meat in terms of its carbon footprint, two 3.5oz servings is the equivalent of driving six miles in your car. On the other hand, one cup of broccoli is responsible for only about half a mile of driving.
Think it won't be the same without the meat? Think again!

JANE STEELE by Lyndsay Faye

Quite frankly I am a bit tired of reading non-fiction at the moment, and this book brings such delight during this trying election season. If you loved
Jane Eyre, this is for you!

"Like the heroine of the novel she adores, Jane Steele suffers cruelly at the hands of her aunt and schoolmaster. And like Jane Eyre, they call her wicked - but in her case, she fears the accusation is true. When she flees, she leaves behind the corpses of her tormentors.
A fugitive navigating London's underbelly, Jane rights wrongs on behalf of the have-nots whilst avoiding the noose. Until an advertisement catches her eye. Her aunt has died and the new master at Highgate House, Mr Thornfield, seeks a governess. Anxious to know if she is Highgate's true heir, Jane takes the position and is soon caught up in the household's strange spell. When she falls in love with the mysterious Charles Thornfield, she faces a terrible dilemma: can she possess him - body, soul and secrets - and what if he discovers her murderous past?"

"October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces."
