Ministry

One Sunday morning a little boy, wiggling in the pew beside his mother, looked up at her and asked: "Momma, when is church going to be over?" We've all been there, hoping, "soon." But the truth of the matter is that the answer is "never."

Church is not over when the sermon ends, or the singing and music is done, or the tithes and offerings are collected. You know the song, "I am the church; you are the church; we are the church together?" Listen now, we are not the center of the church; the church is not the center of the church. Jesus Christ is the center of the church. This seems easy to forget. No pastor, budget, building, program, tradition, theology, organizational structure, or anything else is essential, only Jesus Christ. If these things don't point beyond themselves to Jesus, they are idols and obstacles to the purpose for which they exist.

In Dostoevsky's story, "The Brothers Karamazov," there is the legend of the Grand Inquisitor. It is a frightening illustration of the folly of putting other people and things ahead of Christ as the center of the church. In the story, when Jesus appears one day in the Spanish town square, the Grand Inquisitor has him put in jail. Then the Inquisitor comes to the jail and spends all night explaining to the silent Jesus why he has no right to come back and interfere with the program and work of the church. After his eloquent defense of the church's mandate and authority, the Inquisitor declares to the silent and sad Jesus: "Go! Go and come no more. Come not at all - never, never!"

This is the Inquisitor Interpretation of ministry. It is sad beyond tears to put anything, including the church, ahead of the call and claim of Christ. Through nearly 47 years of ministry to - through - and beyond local churches, my constant prayer has been this, "Jesus!" Jesus is at the center of the church, or the church is not the church at all.

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings, with your most gracious favor, and further us with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name and finally, by your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. - The Book of Common Prayer, UMH #705

Helping Families in Need

FFUMC Wesley's Attic Children's Clothing Ministry is trying to plan a give-away of spring and summer clothing  for needy families on Saturday, April 6 from 9-11 a.m .

We will need families, especially men and older kids, to help carry up the clothing bins from the basement on Friday, April 5 and carry them back downstairs on Saturday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m.

We usually serve about 150-200 children at our spring give-away, but help is needed to make this service possible. With enough help, it won't take more than an hour or less.

Please respond by signing up at the Information Desk or contacting Anita Oberdecker (865-675-1415) or [email protected] . Time for Friday, April 5 will depend on the availability of the majority volunteering. Please list time that would be convenient  for you, either 4:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

In Matthew 25:40 Jesus reminds us that "whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me."
