"Why I Stand For Our National Anthem
"
This week has been replete with images, stories, memorials and Facebook post recollections regarding the horrors of 9/11/01. Everyone older than 6 probably remembers exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard that the planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. I remember that my wife Becky was 6 months pregnant with our first son Rex and she called me from a teacher training session telling me that a plane had just crashed into one of the towers. I was getting ready for court and immediately turned on the TV and was shocked and horrified by the smoke emanating from the north tower. I was watching when the south tower was struck. It took me a few moments to process what I saw. This first plane crash wasn't an accident after all, it was clearly a terrorist attack of the worst kind. As the months and years have passed we have all witnessed how these attacks led us into numerous wars in the Middle East, the ending of the Sadaam Hussein regime and the start of the brutal Islamic State. While the attacks of 9/11 are 15 years old, the impact and effects of that day are very much in our daily lives. The thousands of victims, both civilian and military, police, firefighters and other first responders whose lives have been lost or incalculably changed due to this day serve as a vivid reminder of how precious our country is and how we must pay homage and respect to the people and ideals that make America so unique and special. Is America perfect? Hardly. We have a myriad of injustices and issues that we must address and bring attention to.
However what makes America a good place is that we progress, we grow, we learn and we collectively wish for a better place for ourselves and our children. That's why I stand and honor our flag. That's what I try to teach my children. That's how I try to live my life. I will respect your right to protest, but I don't have to agree with your protest.
On this 15-year anniversary of that most terrible day I hope that we as a country become more connected as American citizens and more compassionate towards each other regardless of race, religion or personal identity.
On a much different note I wanted to join with all the attorneys in our law firm to wish a fond farewell and much good luck to our friend and colleague Michael Bullock. Michael and his wife Jeanette have recently purchased a custom granite company called Granite Direct and they will embark on a new adventure outside of the practice of law. We appreciate your dedication to our firm, clients and partnership over the past 9 years and wish you both nothing but success and happiness. If anyone needs custom granite visit his showroom

A Comparison of the Clinton and Trump Tax Plans
With the presidential election now just over a month away I thought our clients, friends and colleagues might be interested in a summary of each of Hillary Clinton's and Donald Trump's tax plans.
It's unlikely that should either of these candidates be elected that all aspects of their stated tax plans will become law. However, if past elections are any indication there's a good chance that a large portion of a candidate's plan will be enacted into law. This article, which is intended to be unbiased, isn't meant to serve as an exhaustive analysis of each candidate's proposals, and surely in the course of negotiating tax legislation with a new congress we can expect to see changes to the Internal Revenue Code that are not currently proposed by either candidate.

When Man's Best Friend Becomes Man's Biggest Liability
Whether it's Fido, Lassie, or Luna and Petals (in my case), most of us understand the meaning behind the adage "man's best friend." But what happens when you get sued because your "wouldn't hurt a fly" dog bites someone?
Colorado's Legislature enacted a statute governing civil actions against dog owners, commonly known as the "dog bite statute." C.R.S. ยง13-21-124. This statute provides that a person who suffers serious bodily injury from being bitten by a dog can bring an action against the owner of the dog for economic damages

You Do Not Have a Right to Remain Silent
When it comes to your duties as an insured with your automobile insurance company, you do not have a right to remain silent - unless you do not want your insurance company to pay. No one ever talks about what to do when YOU cause a car crash. Notice I did not say car "accident". Let's be honest, there are no accidents when it comes to car crashes. You did not intend to hurt someone when you crashed into the back of their car. You did, however, intend to look at your phone when you were driving. You did intend to too following someone too closely because they were driving slowly. You did intend to look at that Porsche next you when you should have been looking at the traffic slowing in front of you.
