Being a personal injury attorney comes with its share of jokes. My friends often say that I have a sixth sense for the sound of an ambulance and they wonder when my ugly mug will be featured on gawdy billboards and TV commercials. Fortunately, I have thick skin. You need it in this profession. But aside from the jokes and being grouped in with obnoxious TV attorneys, I have found true joy in representing people who have suffered life-changing injuries, being the person they trust to help them through some of the darkest moments of their lives. For many of my clients the broken bones and herniated disks will eventually heal. And when we settle their matters they are able, in most cases, to turn the page and get on with their lives. However, that’s not always the case. And once in a while you meet a client who indelibly changes your life because you get to witness the bravery of the client and his family as they learn to adapt to a permanent change of their lives based on catastrophic circumstances. One such client I had the pleasure to represent suffered a life changing head injury when he was hit by a drunk driver. I have learned so much from this young man’s courage and the absolute resiliency of his family. But, as I have learned, head injuries are one of the most devastating of all injuries because the individual may have to re-learn everything again. Walking, communicating, dressing oneself. Even the most elementary neurologic processes can be Herculean in scope. And for too many there is a tremendous gulf that exists once they have left the hospital or rehabilitation facility. Can they learn to take public transportation safely? Can they purchase groceries or cook a meal? Life must go on, yet for so many people with head injuries the resources to teach them have not kept up with the pace of our busy society. But there is some new hope on the horizon. My client’s family has been instrumental in helping to change the future for many based on their hard work, research and generosity. And we want to help make this dream a reality for those who need resources.
