Home of the Falcons!
"We Engage, Challenge, and Support Every Student, Every Day"
Principal's Message                                                           Oct. 19, 2018

It is with great excitement that I share with our community that Fountain Hills High School received an "A" letter grade from the Arizona Department of Education. Letter grades were released on October 5th, and FHHS was one of the only 36 comprehensive public high schools in Arizona to receive an "A" rating, out of 231 schools. This is a huge accomplishment for our students and teachers for all their hard work. The letter grade is broken down into five categories in which a school can earn points. Half of the points earned come from performance on the AzMERIT exams, and FHHS had one of the highest cumulative scores in the state last year. Graduation rate accounts for 20% of the points and FHHS had significant growth from 2016 to 2017, with 92% of our students graduating on time. The final category relates to college and career readiness. This score is made up of items like completion of career and technical education (CTE) programs, completing a FAFSA, passing Algebra 2 and ELA 11 exams, and qualifying SAT and ACT scores among other items. FHHS scored very well in this area as well. We believe that the opportunities of Reteach and Power Hour, combined with our partnership with Beyond Textbooks has helped us ensure that our kids are achieving at a high level. Congrats to our students and teachers on a job well done.

Football Team Buzzer Beater

Update from Coach Henslin...

The Falcon football team has had an up and down season as their young team has struggled at times to find their identity on offense. Over the last couple of weeks, led by one of the most dominant defenses in 3-A, the team has started to play better and gain a lot of momentum. Tonight is the final Home football game of the year, a win will clinch a spot in the State Playoffs for the second year in a row. Before last year the football team had not made the State Playoffs since 2011.

One of the highlights of the year so far was the Falcons' last second victory at Wickenburg a few weeks ago. The Falcons were leading most of the game only to see Wickenburg, who was 4-0 at the time, come back and have a chance to win the game with a short field goal. The Falcons did not give up. They blocked the game winning kick with senior Eddie Levato scooping up the football and taking it 60 yards to give the Falcons a chance to win the game. With only seconds left Senior Collin Robbins nailed a 43 yard field goal to seal the dramatic victory for the Falcon Football team.

Coed Swim Team Inaugural Season

Update from Coach Schultz...

The Falcon Swim Team swam at ASU's Mona Plummer Pool Saturday on Oct. 6th. The team had amazing results and are continuing to improve in all areas of their events.I am so proud to coach them and to see their personal  improvements  Notable swims included:

Women's 400 Free Relay qualified with a Provisional time for State. The Relay team consisted of Kennedy Muhs, Grace Clark, Erin Morley and Deven Meyers. Kennedy also qualified for state in the 100 free with a fast time of 57.89.

The women also improved their 200 medley relay time by over 5 seconds (this is also a state qualifying time) consisting of Kennedy Muhs, Annika Clark, Erin Morley and Grace Clark.

Madison Payne, Tressa Enterline, Angelina Filas, Holly Garrett and Deven Meyer had 3-6 second improvements in their 50 and 100-freestyle events. Erin Morley had an incredible 100 butterfly race and dropped 8 seconds. These drops are unheard of for seasoned swimmers and Erin is just plain fast right now.

Dani Meyers dropped 9 seconds on her 100 backstroke and her turn over rate was perfect.

Kennedy Muhs went into the 200 Individual Medley, placed 8th, moved up to 6th overall and qualified for the state meet in that event as well. She currently has qualified in 5 individual events and 2 relays. She will have some deciding to do in the next few weeks as to  which events she will be competing in at State on November 3rd.

Grace Clark tried the 100 backstroke for the first time this year and ended up in the top 20 at the meet and swam a fast 1:09.87 dropping over 10 seconds off her entry time. Grace will also swim multiple events at state. Annika Clark continues to perfect her breaststroke and dropped 5 seconds off her best time taking her to the top 20 as well. She is also looking to qualify for the state meet in November.

Swimmers on the boys' side were dropping time in all of their races. Going under 30 seconds in the 50 free were Scott Sorensen and Josef Johnson in the relay.

Ender Trevena, Curtis Cherry, and Darrien Smith also dropped over 3 seconds on the 50 free.Tom Filas recorded a great 100 free time at 1:22.30, dropping 9 seconds off of his best time. This is amazing improvement in such a short race.

In the breaststroke Vinnie Caggiula and Scott Sorensen dropped 8 and 13 seconds respectively. The boys are really improving at fast rates and it shows the dedication and hard work they are putting in at practice is really paying off at the meets. They are learning how to swim the races and their stroke form is improving.

The Falcon Swim Team will be competing in 2 more meets before state and we are continuing to put work in for the next few weeks before we start to taper. With this being our first year of competition, the kids are really motivated to post good times that will establish our first school records for the sport. I really think this is motivation for them to swim fast at every meet.

Engineering Class Creating Competition Robots

Students working on robots to compete in December competition here at FHHS

Update from Dr. Paul...

There are four major robotics competitions supported this year, and all will be hosting at FHHS in the gymnasium. Three competitions are elementary and middle school and one is designated for the high school. The elementary events will be held on October 27th, November 17th, and January 26th. All the elementary competitions are filling fast. The elementary events involve stacking objects as well as having their robot hang on a bar.

FHHS has 5 teams working on robots for their competition on December 7th and 8th. We anticipate up to 40 teams joining us. The high school competition involves scaling a platform and shooting balls at targets.  FHHS supports Arizona's largest competitions that lead up to qualification for the state and global competitions later in 2019.

We need volunteers for all our competitions. Inquiries can be addressed to Dr. Paul at 480-664-5573.
