Ultra processed foods: what are they?

In the Trump administration’s quest to “Make America Healthy Again,” there may be no bigger target than ultra processed foods.


Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nation’s new health secretary, has cited “highly chemically processed foods” as a chief culprit behind an epidemic of chronic disease in the U.S., including ailments such as obesity, diabetes and autoimmune disorders.


Such foods are “poisoning” people, particularly children, Kennedy said during Senate confirmation hearings. He has vowed to work to remove such foods from federal programs...

The (lack of) health in young women

A Federation of Organizations involved in Public Health in the Netherlands has the ambition to reach the healthiest generation of the world in 2040. Health is aimed at all levels; mental, social, and physical. To achieve this goal, the Netherlands needs the healthiest young females of the world.


In contrast, data analysis from the Netherlands shows the opposite; the health of young women is declining fast. In other Western countries, it won’t be much better. The health of young women has worsened worldwide; it is time to face reality. Women’s bodily functioning and metabolism differ from men and need specific female-adapted health support. While many health problems in a population could be prevented when young females are supported for optimal health prior to pregnancy, this is not a priority of Public Health Agencies.

CMMI cancels four payment models early

Healthcare Dive reports:


The CMS Innovation Center is canceling four payment models early and halting two demonstrations before they begin, the agency said Wednesday, in the Trump administration’s latest rollback of federal spending in healthcare.

Four models — Maryland Total Cost of Care, Primary Care First, End-Stage Renal Disease Treatment Choices and Making Care Primary — will end by Dec. 31, according to a news release.

Hantavirus remains a mystery

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause serious illnesses and death. They cause diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). These viruses are spread mainly by rodents and are not spread from person-to-person. It has been determined that HPS caused the recent death of Gene Hackman's wife.
