The Disappearance of Wellfleet's Robust Commercial Herring Industry
Speaker: Lisbeth Wiley Chapman
Presented by the Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum;
hosted at Wellfleet Public Library
Description: Between 1880 and 1900, proceeds of the sale of the herring fishery rights were very lucrative and roughly 250,000 herring were taken from the river annually. What happened? Lisbeth Wiley Chapman, a longtime Board Member of Friends of Herring River, will explain why this robust industry died, why the Herring River was diked at Chequessett Neck Road and Duck Harbor, and the impact the diking had on the health of the herring population of Wellfleet's Herring River.
