GAINESVILLE, FL (6/8/22) – The Florida High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors conducted their fifth and final regularly scheduled meeting of the 2021-22 school year, Tuesday, at the FHSAA office in Gainesville.
The meeting began with the recognition of several NFHS Coaches Association Coach of the Year recipients. Nine of the coaches in attendance were named State Coaches of the Year, while one received the Section Coach of the Year award, and another was selected as National Coach of the Year. During the report of the Finance Committee, the Board approved the current financial statements and the 2022-23 tentative budgets for FHSAA, Inc. and the FHSAA Land Corporation.
Traditional during the June Board Meeting, the board reviewed and approved recommendations for applying, current, and new member schools. The following schools were welcomed as new full members of the FHSAA to begin the 2022-23 school year: Classical Academy (Sarasota), Downton Doral, Mater Academy (Cutler Bay), Mater Academy (Kissimmee), Pineapple Cove (Palm Bay), SLAM (Boca Raton), SLAM (Tampa), SLAM (West Palm Beach).
Additionally, the Board unanimously approved the proposed policy changes to Policies 6.1.3 and 30.1.1. Policy 6.1.3 will allow girls basketball student-athletes to participate in six (6) quarters of in-game competition on the same day. Policy 30.1.1 will require member schools to report an unsportsmanlike act or flagrant foul that led to an ejection of student-athlete(s), coach(es), or other representative(s) of the school’s athletic interest, using the FHSAA’s official process, within one (1) school day of the incident. Both policy changes will go into effect for the 2022-23 school year.
Furthermore, the Board approved the ratification of the 2022 Governance Elections as recommended by the Executive Director, as well as the 2022-23 school year meeting dates for the Board of Directors, Sectional Appeals Committees, and Representative Assembly. The item to modify the football metro division to 5 classifications was removed from the agenda without further discussion.
In their final business of the year, the Board elected Mr. Thomas Kenna, Athletic Director of Cape Coral High School, as President-Elect and honored Mr. Doug Dodd for his service as the FHSAA Board of Directors President. Mr. Dodd was the Association’s first school board member president.
The Board of Directors will convene again on September 25-26, 2022, for their first meeting of the 2022-23 school year. This meeting will be held at the FHSAA Office in Gainesville.
