FHSD Board reviews facility master plan and demographic study

At the Sept. 18 Board of Education meeting, Hollis+Miller and Demographic Analytic Advisors presented updates on the Francis Howell School District Facility Master Plan and Demographic Study. The presentation covered survey results from staff and administrators, facility assessment findings, capacity studies, and demographic projections. Key takeaways included aging facilities, ongoing maintenance needs, enrollment patterns influenced by housing growth and declining fertility rates, and the importance of balancing building utilization across the District.

District leaders will use the data to guide planning priorities and explore options before adopting a long-term facilities plan. A Board of Education work session is being planned for November and will be open to the community.  The full report and presentation slides are available on BoardDocs.

Five core values guide the strategic plan

At the Sept. 18 Board of Education meeting, Chief Communications Officer Jennifer Jolls presented a Key Performance Indicators (KPI) Dashboard. 12 KPIs were established as part of the District's new strategic plan. 2024-2025 school year data served as the baseline. The KPI dashboard will be updated annually and shared with the community. The full strategic plan is available on the District website.

FHSD seeks community input on updated curriculum

Francis Howell School District is inviting community members to review and provide feedback on two revised curriculum documents, Housing & Interior Design and Microsoft Application, through an online survey or email by Oct. 1, 2025. The feedback will help guide final revisions before the documents go to the Board of Education for approval in January. Share your feedback through a short survey.

Trauma-Informed school initiative annual notice

When students endure chronic stress or traumatic incidents, it can have both physiological and emotional consequences, often impairing their ability to function effectively in school. The Trauma-Informed School Initiative is dedicated to establishing safe and nurturing educational environments where students can reach their full potential.

School lunch balances: Text message alerts began Sept. 5

Our goal is to make sure every student has access to a hot meal during lunch. Now that students are not allowed to access their cell phones during the school day to add funds to their lunch accounts, we are seeing an increase in the number of negative lunch account balances.

On September 5, the District began sending weekly text message alerts to notify families when their student's lunch account balance is negative. These messages are sent around 9:30 a.m. every Friday - only to families with one or more negative lunch balances. Families will continue to get email notices from Infinite Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays if their balance is more than $1 negative, and on Wednesdays if the balance falls below $6.

Negative Lunch Balance Policy: As a reminder, students with a negative lunch account balance of any amount will not be able to purchase a la carte items. Once an account reaches a balance of negative $25, students will be offered an alternative meal (typically a Sun Butter and Jelly Sandwich, along with a fruit or vegetable side choice and milk). The cost of the meal will be added to the student’s account.

Opt-In to receive text messages: The District utilizes the SchoolMessenger notification system to provide timely communication about emergencies, weather-related closures, attendance and other important topics. All parents/guardians listed in Infinite Campus are automatically registered to receive phone and email alerts. To opt-in to receive text messages from FHSD - including negative lunch balance reminders - text “Y” or “YES” to 67587.

Check your child’s lunch balance: Meal account balances are available in the FHSD Web Store.

Add funds to your child’s lunch account: Payments can be made through the FHSD Web Store by clicking on the “Food Service Payments” button. The system accepts Visa, MasterCard or Discover (credit or debit cards). Cash and checks can also be sent with your child; drop these off in the school cafeteria so funds can be added to their lunch account. The system is also able to accept electronic checks. Need help? View detailed instructions on how to add money to your student's lunch account.

See what your child is purchasing each day for lunch: Once you’ve set up an account through the FHSD Web Store and added funds to your child’s lunch account, visit EZSchoolPay. Here you’ll be able to see exactly what your child has purchased for breakfast and/or lunch each day. Parents/guardians can also set spending limits through EZSchoolPay.

Apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits: The Francis Howell School District participates in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Congratulations to FHSD bus mechanic Matt Jockenhoefer who placed 4th among mechanics and inspectors from across the state at Missouri’s Best Technician & Inspector Event. This was a hands-on competition testing skills in diagnostics, repairs, and inspections. Want to join our award-winning transportation team? We are hiring.

Francis Howell High School showed support for first responders and military heroes at their Annual First Responders & Military Appreciation Night! The event raised more than $1,000 for The BackStoppers, Inc. who provide ongoing financial and emotional support to the families of police officers, firefighters, volunteer firefighters, publicly-funded paramedics, and EMTs who have lost their lives in the line of duty or suffered a catastrophic injury. See photos from the event here.

Wynnie, a first-grader at Daniel Boone, spent an entire football game happily picking up trash in the stands simply because “it needs to be done and I like to help.” She’s the first feature in our new Humans of Howell series, which highlights the remarkable people who make up the Francis Howell community. They live our values and embody the #OneHowell spirit. Know someone who should be featured? Email the communications department. Read Wynnie's story on our Facebook page.
