FIDF BOCA COMMUNITY HONORS SOLDIERS OF

THE IDF AT ANNUAL GALA

Event Recognizes Spiros for Ongoing Commitment and Dedication to Israel’s Heroes

Boca Raton, FL (December 9, 2022) – In honor of the brave defenders serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), an organization dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of the soldiers of Israel, brought together hundreds of members of the Boca community in a strong show of solidarity during the annual South Palm Beach and Broward Gala on December 4th which was held at the Polo Club of Boca Raton. Dr. Henry and Elaine Spiro were recognized for their ongoing commitment and contributions to FIDF.

The Gala featured speeches from brave IDF soldiers, dignitaries, and Auburn University basketball coach Bruce Perl, a Zionist who spoke about his connection to the land of Israel and why he recently took his team there.

Guests heard from two courageous IDF soldiers who detailed their experiences in the line of duty. First, Captain Nimrod, a third-generation Naval officer, described a days-long battle at sea in 2019. In the heat of battle, he called upon the courage of his grandfather who served in the 1948 war of Independence, and his father who served in Lebanon in 1982. “I realized that in my veins runs the blood of countless Jewish fighters that for generations have protected the Jewish people, and there was no way that that grit and perseverance was going to break on my watch,” he said. He went on to say, “Words cannot describe the effect of FIDF’s support on the IDF’s morale through challenging and routine times. Whether renovating base facilities or speaking out to support Israel, I can say with a full heart that I’ve felt FIDF walking alongside me every step of the way.”

Guests also heard from Lt. Ari, who serves in the Nahal Special Forces Unit. On a recent mission, Ari’s unit was shot at by terrorists, wounding one soldier. Fortunately, Ari and his medic were able to assist him quickly and save his life. Thankful for FIDF’s support, Ari said, “I get to personally see the impact you make on my soldiers, including flights home for Lone Soldiers, providing food for families of soldiers who are going through difficulties and assisting soldiers with their education. We are so grateful for all that you do.”

The event also honored Dr. Henry and Elaine Spiro for their unwavering commitment and dedication to Israel, her heroic guardians, and FIDF. Steve Weil, CEO of FIDF, praised the Spiros for their contributions. “It is our mission to provide for the selfless young men and women who protect Israel, including setting them up for success post-service. It is our sincere pleasure to honor two individuals who have significantly supported the organization and transformed the lives of countless soldiers through educational opportunities,” said Weil.

Attendees included Fred Gluckman, FIDF National Chairman, Rabbi Jack Engel of the Anshei Emuna Congregation, Rabbi Rony Keller of Congregation Bnai Israel, Rabbi David Steinhardt of Bnai Torah Congregation, Rabbi Irving Spielman and Jennifer Romanoff, Jewish Student Union School Director.

Miriam Engel, Director of South Palm Beach/Broward, encouraged the community’s continued support. “Each of us comes from those before us who took risks, were valiant and intrepid, who paved the way for us to sit here as free Jews, the most fortunate generation, to watch Israel become a country and home for all Jews. Those that came before us did their part, now it is our responsibility and privilege to carry the torch and steadfastly protect our inheritance.”
