Internal Funding: Fall offerings to be released on August 23
As part of Research2030, UC's 10-year plan for research, the UC Office of Research has established a variety of funding programs for faculty from across the university. Our intention is to seed fund good ideas, get research and new teams off the ground floor, and help UC researchers become more competitive for larger, more substantial external funding opportunities and nationally competitive awards and appointments. There is something for UC faculty and student researchers in all fields and at any stage in their career. Read more about two recent awardees who leveraged internal funding to take it to the next level: Dr. Brianna Leavitt-Alcántara (Associate Professor, Department of History) and Dr. Manish Kumar (Professor, Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering).
Dr. Leavitt-Alcántara received internal funding, a Summer Stipend from the University Research Council (URC), for her project entitled “The Tzeltal Revolt of 1712: Violence, Religion, and Politics in the Mayan Highlands of Chiapas.” For this project, most of the materials that she needs are located in the Archivo General de Indias (AGI) in Seville, Spain. Using the URC stipend, she was able to visit the AGI, where she developed the archival base of analysis that earned her a competitive grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities to scale up and recognize the project as one of global significance. Congratulations, Dr. Leavitt-Alcántara!
Dr. Kumar received internal funding via the Office of Research Pilots Program for his project entitled “Prototype Development and Feasibility Study of Telehealth Drone.” For this project, Dr. Kumar needed funds to purchase drone components and software licenses, as well as to provide incentives for research participants. Using the seed funding, he was able to create a prototype of a telehealth drone that was capable of remotely-located, pilot-driven home visits to provide two-way communication with clinicians, making home care affordable, readily available, and mobile. This earned him a competitive National Science Foundation grant to scale up the project and recognize it as one of national interest and significance. Congratulations, Dr. Kumar!

Building upon the rich legacy of the University Research Council (URC), UC’s oldest and most prestigious internal funding program, the URC Faculty Research Pivot Awards are targeted to mid-career and beyond faculty who are proposing transformative new ideas and directions for their research, scholarship, and creative activities. This program is for individual faculty and may be discipline-focused or interdisciplinary in nature.
Each year, following a two-stage application and evaluation process, up to five faculty members are awarded $15,000 for a period of 24 months.

Congratulations to the Space Endowment Awardees!
In 2007, UC was the recipient of a substantial monetary gift to attract top talent and establish a competitive space exploration program of research at UC. This gift has supported two endowed chairs - the Thomas Jefferson Endowed Chair for Discovery and the Alan B. Shepard Endowed Chair for Exploration, who have their own innovative research programs - and supports student scholarships and fellowships through the Space Research Institute. In addition, the Office of Research has been using this gift to invest in our research infrastructure and capabilities - all to support broader efforts across our institution to be a leader in space exploration research.

Techniques to Make Your Proposal Competitive
Tuesday, September 12, 2023 | 11am-12pm
|
This workshop will present the competitive intelligence framework and demonstrate how faculty can use this framework to improve their proposals. There are five types of analyses regularly performed in academia: external profiles, capacity analysis, landscape analysis, program analysis, and sponsor analysis. Each will be discussed along with which analyses can turn your proposal into a competitive proposal. There are three key takeaways: how to give your proposal a competitive edge, how to learn about your competition, and how to align your proposal to fit sponsor and program goals.

Writing the One-Pager
Wednesday, September 20, 2023 | 1-2:30pm

Do you know what grantmakers look for when deciding what research to fund? The answers might not be what you think. Showing grantmakers that you know what they want is as important as showing them what you can do with their money. To learn how to effectively communicate the impact and significance of your research through the written word and visuals, we will workshop two white papers, one for a technical audience and one for a non-specialized audience. You will leave with tools you can use to effectively draft white papers and proposal summaries for your own research.
