As FIU SigEp’s Chapter Counselor, Brother Danny Diaz ('98) mentors undergraduate brothers and helps guide Florida Nu toward continued excellence. Recently, Danny was recognized by Sigma Phi Epsilon with a national volunteer award honoring his dedication to the chapter and the fraternity.
For Danny, serving as Chapter Counselor is about giving back to an organization that helped shape his life. As an undergraduate, he benefited from the mentorship of alumni leaders such as Frank Gaviria, who served as his Chapter Counselor, and watched brothers like Fran Oses, Tom Jelke, Eddie Hondal, Nate Ortiz, Sean Gazitua, and Ben Sardinas remain actively involved in supporting the chapter. Their example inspired him to do the same.
“Becoming Chapter Counselor felt like an opportunity to pay that forward,” Danny shared. “Helping young men grow, develop as leaders, and hopefully have an even better experience than we did as students.”
While honored by the national recognition, Danny is quick to credit others for Florida Nu’s success.
“What brings me the greatest pride is helping Florida Nu return to a standard of excellence,” he said. “We are on track to earn our first Buchanan Cup since I served on the undergraduate Executive Board, and seeing our chapter reach that level again is incredibly meaningful. Our goal isn’t simply to win one Buchanan Cup—it’s to build a culture where excellence becomes the expectation. When we focus on developing exceptional young men and building a strong chapter, national recognition follows.”
Danny says the most rewarding part of his role has been building relationships with the undergraduate brothers and watching them develop into confident leaders.
“Watching young men grow in confidence, maturity, accountability, and leadership over time is incredibly rewarding,” he said. “I especially enjoy helping them think differently about what they’re capable of—not just within the chapter, but in life.”
A real estate broker and business leader, Danny credits SigEp with teaching him many of the skills that continue to shape his personal and professional success, including leadership, accountability, communication, teamwork, and relationship building.
For alumni considering getting involved, his message is simple:
“Get involved—even in a small way. Come back to the chapter. Attend a tailgate, a happy hour, or one of our alumni events. Meet these outstanding young men, reconnect with your brothers, and see firsthand what we’re building. Our undergraduate brothers need mentors, role models, career guidance, and alumni who genuinely care about their success. A strong chapter reflects an engaged alumni base. Whether you can give your time, talents, or treasure, every contribution helps strengthen Florida Nu and leaves the chapter better for the next generation.”
Florida Nu’s success has always been built by generations of brothers investing in those who follow them. Thanks to the many alumni who continue to give their time, talents, and treasure—the chapter is well positioned for an exciting future. As Danny learned from the alumni who invested in him years ago, today’s undergraduate brothers will become tomorrow’s volunteers. That’s how great chapters are built, how lasting legacies are created, and how Florida Nu will continue pursuing a culture of excellence for generations to come.
