Greetings! 

  

Tomorrow, I'm going to Colorado to ski for a few days. It's an annual family trip that I really look forward to and the past several years whenever I get ready to go (and even more so, once I'm there), I'm reminded of how much better I ski now than before I found the Feldenkrais Method. Year after year, I marvel at that fact that I become more skilled even when I'm not able to practice the activity in which my skill increases. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for practicing whatever you do. I know I'd be an even better skier if I skied more. I just can't manage the time. But a sustained Feldenkrais practice seems to almost magically improve my skill even between ski trips.

 

My sister (who also goes on these trips) is, among other things, a certified yoga instructor.  Each morning before we ski, she leads us in 45 minutes of yoga. It's the only time I do yoga and yet, just like skiing, each year I feel I'm a little more skilled during those morning yoga sessions--I can sense more and do more with greater ease than I could the year before. That too, is due to my Feldenkrais practice.

 

I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that Feldenkrais isn't just for recovery, it's for self-improvement and, while my examples are physical, hopefully you know by now that the changes facilitated by a continuing Feldenkrais practice aren't limited to your body. With more skill comes more choice and with more choice you feel better, more alive... more human. Have a great week.

We're getting very excited about our 7th Anniversary Event on Tuesday, April 3rd. We hope you'll come out and celebrate our birthday with us. We'll have an ATM, hors d'oeuvres and cake, and a chance to win prizes, including Functional IntegrationSM Sessions and a month's membership to the Chelsea Piers Gym! We're going to start a once-per-week "pay what you wish" ATM class. We've heard that some who might participate cannot for financial reasons and we hate to see anyone who's interested miss out on the benefits to be gained by using the Feldenkrais Method. All will be welcome and we'd like to schedule the class at a time when the greatest number of interested people would be able to attend so we've devised a very simple (one question!) survey to determine the best time to schedule what we'll call our "Community Class."  New Perspectives on Yoga Through the Feldenkrais Method

Some people have called Feldenkrais lessons or exercises "western yoga". From the beginning of his work, Dr. Feldenkrais was interested in yoga. With his scientific understanding of the brain and movement, he used certain asanas as a starting point for his lessons. The Awareness Through Movement lessons in this workshop are selected from those where Dr. Feldenkrais uses particular yoga postures as the subject of inquiry.

 

This workshop is for practitioners of yoga and anyone wishing to expand their Feldenkrais experience. For the yoga enthusiast, this workshop will shed light on how to improve the quality and ease of your practice, and how to avoid injuries. For the non-yoga enthusiast, you will experience Feldenkrais lessons leading in new directions. 

 

You will discover how the Feldenkrais Method uses interesting "tricks" to accelerate the learning of these postures: movement variations, new focuses of attention, non-habitual movements, new ways to move in and out of the posture and smaller steps of approach. These insights will benefit every yoga practitioner, making the postures more accessible and efficient, and offering you a process oriented approach to yoga.  Even students of modest ability will be surprised and pleased by how much they will exceed their expectations.

The Feldenkrais Institute of New York celebrates its 7th Anniversary this year!  To celebrate, we are hosting an evening dedicated to two wonderful organizations that support the outreach of Feldenkrais to diverse populations: The Feldenkrais Foundation's Program for Elder Citizens and The Field Center for Children's Integrated Development.  In exchange for donations, we will be offering an Awareness Through Movement group lesson, wine and hors d'oeuvres and chances to win prizes, including a month's membership at the Chelsea Piers Fitness Center, Functional IntegrationSM sessions with our staff, restaurant vouchers, and more!  All proceeds will be divided between the Feldenkrais Foundation and The Field Center, providing Feldenkrais to many generations of students.

 

Join us on April 3rd for a night of Feldenkrais and fun!  The doors will open at 6:30, and the event will begin with a group Awareness Through Movement lesson at 7:00 pm.  Family members of all ages are welcome.

TMJ Health: Time to Feel Better

Do you experience pain or tenderness in your jaw, ears, eyes or face? Do you suffer frequent headaches or have discomfort while chewing? You may be suffering from a very common condition known as 'TMJ syndrome'. This phrase refers to discomfort in our jaw, or temporo-mandibular joint. Attaching the lower jaw to the head, the TMJ is important because we rely on it each time we talk, smile, or eat. It's also important because the jaw is a common hiding place for problematic habits of chronic tension. Luckily, you can find quick relief from many TMJ symptoms with the Feldenkrais Method�. This special workshop will help you improve the health and comfort of your jaw, increasing your ability to relax and breathe freely. A series of gentle yet powerful Feldenkrais� exercises will help you to maintain a healthier jaw, and a happier you.

These days, we spend a lot of time sitting. We sit at the dining table, while traveling, while in school, while at work, and then when the day is done, many of us sit some more, to 'relax.' Sitting is not a simple activity, and when we sit the wrong way our spine is unable to support our body, forcing muscles to do the job. This results in muscular exhaustion, pain, stiffness, tension, and loss of flexibility. Learning to sit safely can make a huge difference in your everyday comfort.

 

This important three-hour Feldenkrais workshop features a series of remarkable Feldenkrais exercises to help you discover how to sit safely and comfortably, whether you are working at a computer, watching television or eating a meal. This workshop will give you the physical know-how to sit in a way that is dynamic, non-stressful, balanced, and empowering.

 

At this workshop you will:

  • Feel the difference between supported skeletal sitting and non-supported sitting.
  • Learn how supported sitting actually protects your spine, musculature and mobility.
  • Find your 'sit bones' and their relationship to the spine reducing neck, shoulder and lower back pain.

Walking Better, Step by Step

Whether you walk for pleasure, or simply in order to move yourself from point A to point B, your comfort while walking is very important. Are your feet, ankles and knees completely comfortable as you walk? Or, do you often experience pain or discomfort in your hips or back while walking? Improving your body's comfort and function while walking can make a very great difference in your daily life.

 

In this three-hour Feldenkrais workshop you will learn practical and effective strategies for improving your comfort while walking. Join us, to enjoy a series of special Awareness Through Movement� exercises, which will improve your balance, free your back and hip joints, reduce unnecessary effort, and revitalize your step. Participants will learn:

  • The role our ankles and feet play in a comfortable stride.
  • How counterbalance and distribution of effort make your walking easier and lighter.
  • How fundamental patterns of movement allow flexibility in starting, stopping and changing direction.
  • How to free your neck and shoulders as you walk.
