"Celebrating a Great 1st Semester Together"
Superintendent's Message
Dear FJUHSD Community,

This month our theme is Celebrating a Great 1st Semester Together.” As we enter the final few weeks of the first semester, we take a moment to celebrate the shared experiences our students have enjoyed with their peers in the classroom, on the field, in the arts, and in our communities. Students have participated in many events including Back to School Night, Homecoming activities, Red Ribbon Week, performances in theater, choral, band, dance, and visual arts, athletics, and many more. ASB students from every campus participated in the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) Symposium at SOHS in October where they were able to network with other students, gather new ideas, and most importantly, show their school pride!

It has been a busy first semester, and with Winter Break just around the corner, we hope you are able to find time to relax and enjoy a restful break. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we would like to wish all of our students, families, and employees Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. We hope everyone has a fun, relaxing, and safe winter break.

Steve McLaughlin, Ed.D.
Superintendent

For the 2022-23 school year, FJUHSD was approved to implement Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) at Buena Park, Fullerton Union, La Habra, and La Vista High Schools. Parents with students who attend these schools will not be required to complete a lunch application form. Conversely, FJUHSD was not approved for CEP for Sunny Hills, Sonora, and Troy High Schools. While meals will continue to be served to students at no cost at non-CEP schools, the District will be encouraging parents who may qualify for free and reduced meals to complete a 2022-23 lunch application. The District Food Services team is here to support. Please contact us for questions or assistance at (714) 870-2820 or by email at [email protected].
Excellence Among Us
The Fullerton Joint Union High School District is fortunate to be served by many outstanding classified, certificated, supervisory, confidential, management and administrative staff members. Each month, Human Resources has the honor of showcasing a staff member or members who contribute to the support, development and success of our students and who help to make this District exceptional.
This month, Human Resources is proud to recognize one of its own, Personnel Technician Luke Aiello.

As we quickly approach the close of the first semester and the Winter Break, it is a perfect time to celebrate all of the collaborative work that has made the beginning of the 2022-23 school year such an auspicious start.

In his role as Personnel Technician, Mr. Aiello works closely with the Principals’ Secretaries at each school site and Educational Services in order to facilitate and monitor the District’s substitute teacher system. He is responsible for recruiting and onboarding substitute teachers so that our school sites have appropriate coverage when their teachers are absent due to illness, personal necessity or professional development. Since taking over the management of substitute teachers, Luke has increased the District’s pool of substitute teachers from 110 to 174 substitutes. He has also worked closely with Educational Services to monitor and accommodate the substitute needs created by our ongoing SET professional development series, which would not be possible without the coordinated efforts of the Principals’ Secretaries, support staff from Educational Services and Luke. Working together, they have admirably filled the need for substitute coverage throughout the District, thus making professional development possible. While it has at times been a challenge to meet all of our substitute needs, he and his colleagues have and continue to creatively improve the District’s substitute system as the year has progressed. For example, working together, they determined the potential benefit of resident substitutes on each campus, allowing the Principals’ Secretaries to better fill period-by-period needs on their sites.

Thank you, Mr. Aiello, for your exceptional service to our staff, students, parents, community and District! You truly represent the excellence among us.

2022 Years of Service Recognitions
On November 1st, the District recognized staff from the Education Center, Maintenance and Operations, Facilities and Construction, and Transportation departments during the District’s annual Years of Service Recognitions. Employees who have completed 20, 25, 30, 35, or 40 years of service in the District at the start of the 2022-2023 school year were recognized by their administrative teams, Board Members, Cabinet, and representatives from Human Resources at their school sites. Photos capturing some moments from the recognitions can be found below. Congratulations to all who were recognized! We are grateful for every employee’s dedication to the District and the students we serve.

Resources
Suicide Prevention Lifeline

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.
