"FJUHSD is the Place to be Supported!"
Dear FJUHSD Staff, Students, and Community,

Fall is officially here and the first quarter of school will be coming to a close before we know it! The Student Advisory Council recently kicked off their Annual SAC Symposium on September 22, 2023 at SOHS. This was a day filled with energy, spirit networking, and learning that ASB students will carry over to their student bodies for the remainder of the school year. Be sure to take a look at the photos for this day within our newsletter.

Our theme for this month is “FJUHSD is the Place to be Supported.” Inside this month’s newsletter, we have highlighted our Mental Wellness Team! This year, we have staffed each school site with a Mental Health Specialist in addition to our Counseling teams to work collaboratively and provide support to students, family, and staff members.

In addition, we have many awareness days in October. We would like to give a special "Thank you" to our staff for all that they do. We couldn't do it without the support of ALL our FJUHSD employees.

As a reminder, The Great ShakeOut is on October 19, 2023 at 10:19 am. Wishing everyone a wonderful fall and be sure to check out our many resources on our website and social media.

Steve McLaughlin, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Suicide Prevention
At each school this September, in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month, students participated in a variety of activities. By writing a positive message on a sticky note spreading hope and awareness or putting their handprint on a HOPE poster, FJUHSD students were able to show solidarity and spread awareness.

Facilities & Construction Updates
Sonora High School - Pool
We are just days away from completing the new pool at Sonora High School. The pool will be plastered on September 27 and we will begin filling it with water! We anticipate the chemicals to be stabilized within 10-14 days. The scoreboard installation will begin on September 28, just a couple of weeks before the Sonora athletes get to enjoy their own championship facilities.
La Habra Science Classroom Modernization Project
The new windows, cabinets and whiteboards are currently being installed. We will touch up the paint and the floor installation can begin. Building 100 is scheduled to be completed on October 13 and Building 200 wing is scheduled for completion on October 27.
Fullerton Union High School Pool Modernization
Demolition is currently underway. The breakers and tractors have removed the deck and are currently inside the pool and making plenty of noise. We are also working on new utility pipes to replace the infrastructure that feeds the area. Demolition should be completed in the next couple of weeks.
National School Bus Safety Week
October 16 through October 20, 2023

The third week in October has been a celebrated tradition for the School Bus community since 1970. National School Bus Safety Week was established with one goal in mind; the opportunity to educate bus drivers, students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and mentoring the public about the importance of safety in and around a school bus.

Three Important Safety Tips

  • Red lights flashing on a school bus warn motorists to come to a stop when the bus is loading or unloading students.
  • School buses transporting students must come to a complete stop at all railroad crossings. Before crossing the tracks the driver must open the passenger door, look and listen in both directions, then proceed when safe.
  • School buses have many areas that are blind to the driver. “The danger zone” is a 12 ft. area around the bus where students are most in danger of not being seen by the driver. Be cautious; anytime you see a school bus, always anticipate that students are around.

The bus driver is the most important safety device on the bus. Their ability to operate the vehicle safely and monitor the vehicular movements of other vehicles on the road is what keeps our students safe. So next time you see one of our bus drivers, give them a thumbs up.
Teacher Signing Day
Each year, the District initiates the signing of employment contracts for teachers in their probationary years (Prob-1 and Prob-2) or transitioning into permanent (Tenured) status. Traditionally, this event is conducted at the Education Center/District Office. We are excited to introduce a new and employee-centric approach.

In a sincere effort to foster stronger connections with our school sites and employees, our dedicated, certificated personnel technicians, Marina Devine and Joni Best, visited each site instead of requiring employees to visit the Education Center for the contract signing process.

To make these sessions not only productive but also enjoyable, Marina and Joni have incorporated a thoughtful touch. In addition to facilitating the necessary paperwork, they bring treats and exclusive District "swag" to add a delightful and personalized touch to the experience.

This year's contract signings took place from September 20 to 28, 2023, with specific dates assigned to different school locations:

September 20: La Habra High School
September 21: Sunny Hills High School
September 25: Fullerton Union High School
September 26: Buena Park High School
September 27: La Vista/La Sierra and Troy High School
     September 28: Sonora High School

Human Resources believes this approach not only streamlines the contractual process but also reinforces our commitment to creating a supportive and engaging work environment for our certificated staff.
Happy Administrator Week!
October marks the celebration of the Week of the School Administrator, a dedicated period to honor and appreciate the tireless efforts of school leaders who play a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape. This week serves as a moment to recognize the dedication, innovation, and leadership of school administrators who work tirelessly to create a positive and enriching learning environment. From fostering collaboration among educators to ensuring the smooth operation of schools, these administrators are instrumental in the success of students and the overall educational community.

Let's take a moment in October to express gratitude for their commitment to excellence in education during the Week of the School Administrator.
Suicide Prevention Lifeline

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.
