Dear FJUHSD Staff, Students, and Community,
It’s great to see students back on campus and fully participating in the many offerings across each school site. We began the 2023/24 school year by welcoming almost 13,000 students and 1,200 staff members back to campus. As we move into the school year, we are excited to watch as students explore and experience the quality education that the FJUHSD team of educators afford them. Our theme this month, which we will focus on for the entire school year is, FJUHSD is the Place to be Safe! We have implemented many safety plans, protocols, and resources this year and would like to share them with you in this month’s newsletter.
I want to thank our parents for having attended Back to School Nights at Troy, Sunny Hills, La Habra, and Fullerton Union High Schools. We still have a few schools who have Back to School Nights coming up, so be sure to check our calendar for those dates.
We look forward to a safe and rewarding school year supporting our students and working hard to ensure their success. FJUHSD is the place to be Safe!
Steve McLaughlin, Ed.D.
Superintendent

FJUHSD is the Place to be…Safe! FJUHSD has made a commitment to creating a standard of excellence around safety in our district. As we work to become a leader in school safety we have focused our efforts in five areas:
- Safety Plans
- Partners
- Resources
- Safety Drills
- Communication
|
|
Safety Plans
In the event of an emergency on campus, time is of the essence. With that in mind we will be implementing the Incident Command System (ICS) model for our site safety teams. The ICS model is how first responders communicate concisely during an emergency and for multiple agencies; police, fire, and our schools, to be on the same page. We kicked off the 2023 – 24 school year introducing the ICS model to all FJUHSD employees. We then looked at our existing safety practices and existing site safety teams to make sure the right people are in the right positions to align with the ICS model. Multiple trainings are scheduled throughout the year to ensure that our staff are familiar with this system and are able to apply it in the event of an emergency.
Schools in FJUHSD are as unique as the families and students who create our community. However, we want to make sure that safety practices at all FJUHSD sites are the same. Should a student be at their home campus or perhaps they’re visiting another school for an activity we want to make sure protocols are the same. We have developed uniform safety plans for all sites in the district that take into account the uniqueness of a campus while creating uniform FJUHSD safety procedures while following the ICS model of emergency management.
|
|
Resources
As we create the FJUHSD standard of excellence around school safety we wanted to look at what supplies are available to our students and staff. We have created a universal standard of what every site across the district will have on hand in the event of an emergency. We have implemented containers on campus to store emergency supplies and to make sure that they are readily accessible in case of an emergency. FJUHSD has made a significant investment in our radio communication system to ensure that all sites in the district can be connected. This fall, improvements to our radio infrastructure will be underway as repeaters are added to our campuses. These repeaters will allow district radios to connect seamlessly from one site to another. Whether grounds crews are visiting La Habra or Troy High School they will be able to seamlessly integrate to that campuses radio network. Additionally, the reception of radios on campus will be greatly improved ensuring that staff can clearly communicate no matter where they are on campus. In the event of an emergency the district office will be able to reach all district radios instantaneously ensure that everyone receives swift and accurate messaging.
While cellular communication has become a standard, our radio network will be able to communicate even in the unlikely event that cellular towers are unavailable.

|
|
|
Safety Drills
We have added additional Safety Drills this year for all FJUHSD schools. Safety drills started before students set foot on campus as all school sites were trained in the Run, Hide, Fight Intruder training. All school SROs were in attendance for these trainings as we continue to create a standard of common language across the district. Staff were familiarized with the differences between a Shelter in Place scenario when there is a potential threat in the vicinity of a campus and a Lockdown scenario when there is a threat on campus. As we continue to implement the ICS model at our schools additional drills have been added so that our school leaders and our staff are equipped with the ability to react in a way that will protect our students.
|
|
Communication
Part of the safety practices in FJUHSD is a standard of communication. We continue to work across the district to create a common language around safety. So that in the event that there is an emergency on campus we are able to react quickly to manage the situation.

FJUHSD is the Place to be Safe!
|
|
Among many other things, FJUHSD is the place to be safe from illegal drugs. Fentanyl continues to pose a major safety risk within our community, and we believe that the more you know, the better equipped you are to notice the signs and symptoms of dangerous drug use. Please click HERE and see below for some important and useful things parents should know regarding Fentanyl from the Orange County Department of Education.

California Education Code 49392 calls all school districts to inform parents or guardians of child access, prevention, and safe firearm storage laws. FJUHSD is committed to the safety of our schools and would like to remind everyone that weapons of any kind, including fake or replica weapons, are strictly prohibited from all school district property.

Excellence Among Us
The Fullerton Joint Union High School District is fortunate to be served by many outstanding classified, certificated, supervisory, confidential, management and administrative staff members. Each month, Human Resources has the honor of showcasing a staff member or members who contribute to the support, development and success of our students and who help to make this District exceptional.
This month, Human Resources is proud to recognize the Sonora High School (SOHS) campus supervision team.
Each day, nearly 1,800 students arrive at Sonora High School to begin their days and to receive an exceptional education that will prepare them for their future endeavors and successes. Often, the first SOHS staff member these students encounter is a smiling member of the school’s campus supervision team. These staff members are responsible for monitoring the community surrounding the school, its outdoor facilities and its classrooms, hallways and restrooms. Most importantly, the members of the SOHS campus supervision team are responsible for ensuring the safety of SOHS and its students, parents, staff and community members.
The SOHS campus supervision team is made up of Campus Supervisor Liaison Jonathan Stevens and Campus Supervisors Vanessa Echevarria, Andrea Munoz and Michael Takkinen.
Whether directing the morning drop off or afternoon pick up of students in the parking lot, monitoring the hallways during each passing period and encouraging students to be to class on time or supervising an after school event, the members of the campus supervision team allow SOHS to operate safely and securely. Without them, we would all immediately feel the impact of their absence. Traffic would grind to a halt, students would miss being greeted at the doors of the school and in the hallways and the sense of security we take for granted would be compromised.
Thank you Jonathan, Vanessa, Andrea, and Michael. Your exceptional service to our staff, students, parents, community and District truly represents the excellence among us and ensures that SOHS and the FJUHSD is the place to be safe!

This month’s FJUHSD Job Spotlight is on Food Services Department. The Fullerton Union High School team featured here is one example of the wonderful teams we have at each campus. Sherri, Esther, Maria, Rebecca, and Ashly shared that they love working together. They bring a joyful spirit to work and try to implement fun and laughter into each day. They enjoy their schedule, which allows them to drop off and pick up their children, or go to school to pursue higher education. They love their students and see each FUHS student as their own. They know that they make a difference in the lives of our students. They shared that they see the impact they have had on the students most at the end of the school year when the seniors stop by to say goodbye and they are often asked to sign yearbooks.
FJUHSD would like to thank all Cafeteria Leads, Cooks, and Senior Food Service Workers for the outstanding work that they do!
If you would like to apply to become a member of the FJUHSD team, please view our posting on EdJoin.

Suicide Prevention Lifeline
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States.
When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.
