Community engagement is at the forefront of my mission to provide resources, events, and support for our residents and businesses. Throughout the month of May, we proudly recognize Haitian Heritage Month — a time to celebrate the rich culture, history, resilience, and lasting contributions of the Haitian community throughout Broward County and beyond. This month serves as an opportunity to honor the vibrant traditions, music, art, language, and spirit of the Haitian people, whose influence continues to strengthen and enrich our diverse community. Broward County is proud to celebrate and support the Haitian community through cultural events, community engagement, and initiatives that promote unity, inclusion, and opportunity for all residents. Haitian Heritage Month reminds us of the importance of preserving cultural identity while continuing to build bridges that bring communities together. As your Broward County Commissioner for District 7, I encourage residents to take time this month to learn, celebrate, and appreciate the many contributions of the Haitian community. Together, we recognize the beauty of our diversity and the shared values that continue to move Broward County forward.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, we proudly recognize and thank the dedicated educators who work tirelessly to inspire, guide, and shape the future of our community. Their commitment, compassion, and impact extend far beyond the classroom, helping students grow academically, personally, and professionally every day.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore careers with companies such as GFC Crane, Intercruises, Terminal Security Solutions, Resolve Marine, Omni Hotel, and many more, while also learning about certification programs, emerging career pathways, and strategies to help overcome barriers to career advancement. I invite students to apply for the Broward County District 7 Office Volunteer Internship Program, an opportunity to gain hands on experience in local government while supporting impactful community initiatives. Through this program, participants can contribute to public service and outreach efforts, assist with policy research, and strengthen their communication and leadership skills in a professional setting. Applicants must be currently enrolled students with strong communication abilities and availability of up to 20 hours per week. This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, and academic credit may be available. I encourage interested students to apply or scan the provided code to learn more.

Spirit Shutdown: CareerSource Broward Rapid Response Event

Watch the video down below as I visit CareerSource Broward’s rapid response event for former Spirit Airlines employees affected by the company’s sudden shutdown. During the event, I spoke directly with impacted residents, shared County resources, and connected families with job assistance and emergency support services through Broward County’s Family Success Centers.

Hurricane Preparedness Week 2026

Broward County is recognizing National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 3-9, a statewide national reminder for residents and municipalities to get ready ahead of Florida’s hurricane season, which begins June 1. Now is the time to review emergency plans, check supply kits, and stay informed on evacuation zones and alert systems. Each day of the week highlights a different topic in hurricane preparation, including:

• Know Your Risk: Wind & Water
• Prepare Before Hurricane Season
• Understand Forecast Information
• Get Moving When a Storm Threatens
• Stay Protected During Storms
•  Use Caution After Storms
• Take Action Today

Residents can find critical resources, including preparedness checklists, 

the Vulnerable Population Registry, and shelter information at Broward.org/Hurricane. Taking steps now helps ensure a safer, more resilient County throughout hurricane season.

In recognition of National Small Business Week (May 3-9), The County's Office of Economic and Small Business Development is highlighting the many programs and resources available to help local businesses grow and succeed. Entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals are invited to attend the annual Broward and Beyond Business Conference on Friday, June 12, from 8 AM to 4:30 PM at the Broward County Convention Center. This free event offers valuable networking opportunities, expert insights, and practical strategies to help businesses expand, compete, and thrive in today’s market. 

Adoption Fees Waived at Animal Care

During National Pet Month, Broward County Animal Care is joining the "Empty the Shelters" campaign, a national initiative led by BISSELL Pet Foundation to help pets find loving homes faster. The Foundation will be paying adoption fees for all dogs and cats now through May 17. Adopters are only required to pay the $25 Broward County pet registration fee. All adopted pets will be sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped. 

Not quite ready for adoption? Animal Care recently rolled out a new campaign: “Volunteers Saves Lives. Period.” Flexible volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, students, and groups are available. No experience necessary - just a willingness to help.

 Eyes to the Sky Fort Lauderdale

Save the date for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, which is set for May 9-10 on Fort Lauderdale beach. Experience thrilling aerial performances, including the renowned United States Air Force Thunderbirds, as they take flight above the Atlantic. This high-energy event is bound to bring together spectators from across the region for a weekend of excitement in our very own backyard.

City of Pembroke Pines

The Planning and Economic Development Department is responsible for coordinating the City’s housing programs available through state and federal programs. The City partners with a local vendor, Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida, Inc. (CRAFLA), to implement and process the City’s housing programs.  

• Housing Grant Programs: The City of Pembroke Pines is pleased to offer purchase assistance for very low-to-moderate-income households seeking to buy a property for use as their primary residence. Funding is available on a first-come, first-qualified basis until program funds are exhausted. Assistance comes in the form of a 0% interest deferred second loan that converts to a grant if all program conditions are met.
• Sewer Connection Grant: The City of Pembroke Pines is pleased to offer a grant program to assist low- to moderate-income homeowners who are required to connect to Broward County’s sewer system. The program is administered by Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida, Inc. (CRA) on behalf of the City. CRA will manage the intake process and review applications for eligibility. This program provides eligible Pembroke Pines residents with up to $10,000 in financial assistance to cover costs.

Housing Assistance Programs

The City of Miramar's Housing Division is dedicated to providing affordable, safe, and stable housing to enhance community well-being and support low- to moderate-income families in achieving economic success and a high quality of life. The city has created the following programs to aid with housing:

• First-time Homebuyer Program: This program provides down payment and closing cost assistance to very-low and low-income first-time homebuyers. The amount of assistance varies with income level and is available on a first-come, first-qualified basis until no more funding remains under the program. Assistance is in the form of a 15-year, 0% interest deferred second loan that reverts to a grant if all program conditions are met. Please contact City’s grant consultant, Community Revitalization Affiliates, Inc at (954) 939-3271 for up-to-date funding availability
• Residential Utility Connection: This program provides grant assistance up to $5,000 to connect to the City’s main sewer system. This activity benefits low income persons. This is a one-time grant provided by the City of Miramar. A second mortgage is not applied to the property.
• Rental Assistance Program: This program provides up to $8,000 to assist eligible households with the required upfront rental deposit (first and/or last month’s rent) and/or utility connection/start-ups to move into a new unit. This is a one-time grant provided by the City of Miramar and is not on-going monthly rental assistance.

Miramar offers a variety of programs and resources to help businesses succeed by fostering growth, supporting local entrepreneurs, and creating opportunities to connect with city contracts and the broader business community. From grants and financial incentives to counseling services, networking events, and streamlined permitting, the City is dedicated to making Miramar a place where businesses can start strong, expand with confidence, and thrive for the long term.

• Business Industry Development (BID) Program – Supports local, small, minority, and women-owned businesses by facilitating contracting and development opportunities.
• Contracting Opportunities – The city maintains bid opportunities, with notifications available through Onvia DemandStar. Preference points are available for local and small business bidders.
• Small Business Signage Program – Provides up to $10,000 in financial assistance for signage improvements.
• Small Business Grant Program – Offers funds to help businesses grow and expand operations.
• Vacant Storefront Cover Program – A no-cost program to install artistic coverings on vacant storefronts to improve commercial corridors.
• Vendor Registration – Businesses can register online to do business with the City of Miramar, with a brochure available to guide the process.
• Business Services – Free counseling through SCORE and the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Chamber, commercial rehabilitation assistance for property owners, expedited permitting for certain projects, and planning/zoning support.

Getting around Miramar is easy and free with the Mira Motion Community Shuttle. Four routes connect neighborhoods to key destinations, local attractions, and Broward County Transit, offering a convenient option for work, school, appointments, and more. All routes begin and end at the Miramar Town Center Transportation Hub.

Hours: Monday through Friday

(No service on weekends or holidays)

Key Stops Include:

• Pembroke Lakes Mall

• Miramar Town Center

• Multi Service Complex

The shuttle is free to ride. Connecting to Broward County Transit may require fares.

City of Hollywood

The City of Hollywood and Broward County are committed to supporting residents through a variety of affordable housing initiatives. Both local governments offer housing assistance programs designed to increase access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or a renter facing financial hardship, there are resources available to help.

• City of Hollywood First-Time Homebuyer Purchase Assistance Program​: Qualified buyers can receive a deferred payment loan at 0% interest, 15-year term, up to $50,000 to purchase property within Hollywood's eligible Neighborhood Pride areas. • The City of Hollywood’s Rental Assistance - Eviction Prevention program, using State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds, offers help to renters who might be on the verge of homelessness due to not being able to afford their rent. The funds for the program are administered, by the City of Hollywood Community Development Division, as a grant and no repayment is required. • The Housing Rehabilitation Loan is secured by a mortgage and promissory note prepared by the City. The terms of the mortgage and note are as follows: A deferred payment loan for thirty 30 years, unless the home is sold, rented, ceases to be the primary residence of the homeowner, or is transferred or conveyed by any other means. Zero (0) percent interest. The debt is payable in full on the maturity date set forth in the Mortgage that is thirty years from the date of the signing of the Promissory Note and Mortgage. Hollywood Beach Golf Club

The Hollywood Beach Golf Club is now open for public use. This project, part of the voter-approved General Obligation Bond, includes a fully renovated 18-hole golf course and a new clubhouse featuring a pro shop, dining area, meeting space, renovated maintenance building, new cart barn, updated signage and expanded parking.

Course improvements include re-aligned holes to accommodate the new clubhouse location, new irrigation systems, concrete cart paths, enhanced landscaping, mid-course restrooms and new fencing.

Flashback Friday: Haitian Heritage Celebration 🇭🇹

For this week’s Flashback Friday, and as we continue celebrating Haitian Heritage Month, I’m looking back at the City of Miramar’s annual Haitian Heritage Celebration that I proudly hosted during my time serving as Vice Mayor of Miramar in 2024. This exciting community event brought residents together for an evening of Haitian culture, music, dancing, art, and family fun at Shirley Branca Park. The celebration featured live entertainment, a student art exhibit, free food and drinks, and a special performance by Haitian artist Darlene Desca. Events like these continue to highlight the importance of embracing and celebrating the diverse cultures that strengthen and enrich our South Florida community.

The Bold Justice Nehemiah Annual Action Event

The Bold Justice Nehemiah annual action event was held recently and pastors along with some members of their congregations focused their efforts on affordable housing and immigration. I sponsored a resolution where myself and my colleagues committed to ensuring funding for affordable housing options annually.

Keys to the County: Wyclef & Melky Jean

District 7 staff had the honor of attending the Key to the City Reception hosted by the City of Tamarac, where Broward County Keys to the County were presented on my behalf to global music icon Wyclef Jean and accomplished entrepreneur, recording artist, and humanitarian Melky Jean. This special recognition celebrated their extraordinary contributions to music, culture, philanthropy, and community empowerment throughout the world. Together, Wyclef and Melky Jean represent excellence, resilience, and the rich cultural pride of the Caribbean community, while continuing to inspire generations through their talent, advocacy, and humanitarian efforts. Broward County is proud to recognize individuals whose impact transcends borders and uplifts communities both locally and globally.

CareerSource Broward Rapid Response Event for Former Spirit Airlines Employees

I recently visited CareerSource Broward’s South Center in Hollywood to meet with former Spirit Airlines employees affected by the company’s sudden shutdown and mass layoffs across South Florida. During this rapid response event, residents received resume assistance, job search support, career counseling, unemployment guidance, and workforce training opportunities to help them transition into new careers. I also appreciate the collaborative efforts of CareerSource Broward, FloridaCommerce, Broward Sheriff’s Office, Broward County Human Services, and participating employers such as Coca-Cola and Envoy, who came together to support our residents during this difficult time. Broward County’s Family Success Centers are also available to assist impacted residents with emergency support services, including potential help with rent, mortgage, and utility assistance during this transition period.
