MAY 2021 eMAGAZINE
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Greetings FLA Family,

As we prepare for the ending of the 2020-2021 school year, I am very thankful for all that we have accomplished together. There were no shortages of challenges. However, throughout everything, we remain here together fighting a good fight on behalf of our Scholars. These challenging times brought us closer as an academy, as a community, and as a family who are focused on providing the best for our Scholars.

We will continue to overcome obstacles and move forward to higher ground. As we do so, let's keep this quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in mind: "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Leading may seem easy, but when difficult times arise, the true character of a leader is determined. The truth of that statement is, the true character of those who are being led is determined. I am humbled and thankful for the opportunity to continue to be a part of the vision and plan of FLA.

We are continuously creating a learning institution where our parents have the opportunity and privilege to educate the next generation of Scholars on the south side of Atlanta. There is much work to accomplish. Together, I am unwaveringly confident that we will accomplish all of the work and build a strong foundation upon which the next generation of leaders will build.

Creativity, strategic partnerships, new ideas, and various approaches to solving our challenges are at the heart of building our academy into the powerhouse that it is becoming. Our Scholars, faculty, staff, parents, and partners in education have done a fantastic job with what we have had to work on during this pandemic. Thank you, everyone, for all you have done!

As we head into this summer, I am very excited about launching our new programs within FLA and our existing and new community partnerships. It truly takes a village, and I invite you to join us as we continue to move forward.

Scholars who need to attend summer school from June 1-30, 2021, please prepare to register soon. We are finalizing details of the FLA SUMMER EXPERIENCE for our Scholars and the community. Please be on the lookout for new information that is forthcoming this week.

Our steps are ordered. Our hands are steady. Our minds are focused. Our hearts are clear. When success is the only option, the roads are not as complicated as the opposition would have us to believe. Remain encouraged as we together build young men with integrity, who continue to soar to greater heights.

MALIK RICHARDSON - Valedictorian

Malik Richardson is the Valedictorian and the top SAT Scholar for the Class of 2021 at Fulton Leadership Academy (FLA). He entered FLA in August 2017 and has participated in numerous extracurricular activities, including the Student Government Association, National Honor Society, and National English Honor Society. Richardson credits the teachers and his peers for helping him develop into a leader of integrity, honesty, and good character.

"The influential teachers and staff have impacted me the most while attending FLA. My friends and my teachers forced me to step up and help those who were struggling in the classroom so that everyone could get ahead," Richardson said appreciatively of the entire faculty and staff at FLA, including the Scholars. "The staff at FLA works extremely hard to ensure that every student is willing to learn and try their best. No matter how far ahead or behind a Scholar maybe, the teachers make sure that the Scholars have what they need whether it be academically, emotionally, or mentally to succeed not only in school but for the rest of their life."

After graduation, Richardson has decided to pursue a college education at Morehouse College. He embarks on a new chapter of his life that will challenge him to become a better young man and leader each day. Richardson leaves behind this encouraging quote for the young men at FLA as they become future leaders of the world: "A good man's character is not made up of a single trait, but rather an amalgamation, and cultivation of several traits that make up who he is."
KAFELE JOHN - Salutatorian

Kafele John is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2021 at Fulton Leadership Academy (FLA). He entered FLA in the Fall of 2019 and also became a dual-enrollment Scholar. He registered for FLA's high school-college Dual Enrollment Pathway program to gain college course credit. Along with earning his high school diploma from FLA, John will also graduate with an Associate of Arts degree from Georgia Military College.

One of his best memories as an FLA Scholar was in his aviation class launching hot air balloons and learning the science behind the experiment. John is thankful for the teachings he has gained at FLA, which has helped him distinguish his individualism and sense of self.

"I would say that being at FLA has been a journey, not necessarily the one I wanted but the one I needed. The rapid growth I had to undergo was unlike anything I've experienced in any other environment," John said candidly about his experience as an FLA Scholar. "Whether it was being surrounded by such people felt almost part of a community/village or the fact that it's been different from anything I have ever been in. I am glad I had this step in life."

After graduation, John plans to enroll in New York University in the Spring of 2022.

John shares a quote that has led him toward greatness as an FLA Scholar and beyond: "You must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from, your only limit is your soul."
