The Forest Lake Academy Parent Association and Forest Lake Academy warmly invite you and your family to join us for Ignite: Family Agape Vespers, Friday, August 14 at 7:00 PM in the FLC Warehouse. Dress is a nice casual for this event.

Come enjoy an evening designed for the entire family as we gather for worship, food, and fellowship, celebrating the special calling God has placed on each of us and on our FLA family as a whole. We look forward to seeing you there.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Below is detailed the NHS selection process from their handbook. Eligible students have been sent an invitation to a Microsoft Teams group in order to begin the application process. Please note that all applications must be completed by Wednesday, August 26, at 6:00 p.m. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Mrs. Sugaski is available to provide assistance on Tuesday and Thursday (August 18 & 20) during lunch.

Students who have earned an unweighted cumulative high-school GPA of 3.75 or above are eligible to be considered as a candidate for membership in the National Honor Society. 

The Forest Lake Academy Chapter of NHS is a member of the national NHS, which operates for high schools under the NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals). The organization is based on four characteristics: scholarship, character, service, and leadership. The purpose of the organization is to encourage highly motivated students with strong characters (Christian characters at FLA) to serve in their communities. 

FLA’s chapter is looking for candidates who demonstrate excellence in all four NHS pillars and who have a strong desire to serve others and become effective leaders in our school and community. Before applying for the National Honor Society, students should carefully consider the duties and requirements of an NHS member and decide whether they want to be a part of this active organization. 

• 20 hours of community service per year in addition to the service hours required for graduation and Bright Futures 
• Regular attendance at all NHS chapter meetings (usually at lunchtime one Tuesday per month) 
• Participation in leadership development activities as outlined by the chapter 
• Attendance and active participation in all NHS service projects and other activities 
• Maintaining at least a 3.75 GPA and good citizenship standing at FLA 
• Membership dues of $20 per school year + additional fees based on various projects and events.  

FLA adheres to the selection process as outlined in the national NHS constitution: 

1.     A committee of five faculty members is appointed by the principal of the school. The NHS advisers serve as non-voting chairpersons for the committee. 

2.     Students are initially selected as candidates based on a GPA of 3.75 or above. Candidates must also be sophomores, juniors, or seniors who have attended FLA for at least one year. 

3.     Opportunity is provided for candidates to submit a selection form of relevant activities for committee consideration. This form is not an application; it serves as information for the selection committee. Candidates will also write a short essay and obtain two character references, one from a FLA faculty member and one from a member of the community. 

4.     The committee selects the members. 

5.     The principal approves the selections. 

6.     Students are inducted into the NHS Chapter of National Honor Society. 

Students desiring to be considered for selection into NHS must complete a three-part application packet. Late or incomplete submissions will not be accepted or considered. 

Part 1: Activity Information Form. This form will give the selection committee necessary information to determine qualification for membership. Include only information from high-school years, not from elementary or middle school. 

Part 2: Essay. Each candidate must also write and submit an essay of 200-300 words explaining why they want to be a member of the National Honor Society, what they feel they can contribute to the NHS chapter, and how they think they exemplify the qualities of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. 

Part 3: Character References. Candidates must obtain two character references, one from an FLA faculty member (not one of the NHS advisers or members of the selection committee), and one from a member of the community who knows you well (such as a pastor, volunteer coordinator, or work supervisor, not a relative or close family friend).

MAP TESTING

Tuesday, August 25 - Half-day School

FLA partners with the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in their standardized testing, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Test. 

Test scores are required to maintain Step-Up scholarship eligibility. Please ensure your student participates in testing. If your student is absent on the scheduled test day, a make-up session will be offered, and details will be shared during the week of testing.

Testing takes place three times a year during the school day:

• August 25, 2026
• January 19, 2027
• April 20, 2027

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing is a computer-based assessment that helps measure a student’s academic growth over time in subjects like reading, math, language usage, and sometimes science. 

Unlike a traditional test, MAP is adaptive, meaning:

• Questions adjust in difficulty based on how a student answers
• If a student answers correctly, questions get harder
• If a student answers incorrectly, questions get easier 

This helps give teachers a clear picture of:

• What students already understand
• What they are ready to learn next 

Important to know:

• It is not a pass/fail test
• It is designed to track growth, not just grade-level performance

8:00am-9:10am - Language Test  

9:10 am- 9:20 am – Break

9:20am-11:10 am - Math 

11:10 am-11:20am - Break

11:20am-12:40 pm - Reading

12:40pm - Dismissal (no early dismissal)

DROP-OFF REMINDERs

A few quick reminders:

• Student parking and faculty parking are not available for parent parking during morning drop-off. Student have assigned parking spots. Visitor parking is noted on the campus map below.

• If your student needs extra time to gather their things, please park in the visitor area and allow them to get situated. 

• Out of consideration for the families behind you, please keep the drop-off line moving by pulling fully forward and avoiding extended stops in the drop-off zone.

• Please do not drop students off in the active roadway. For everyone’s safety—and out of consideration for the families behind you—please use the designated drop-off area.

• Students, for your safety, always use the crosswalk when crossing the road.
