Flatfile Friday —————————————————
with Scott Kiefer
Greetings!
Welcome to CPC's newly designed e-letter and 17th iteration of Flatfile Friday!

On the third Friday of each month, CPC's very own Flat Phil gives you a peek into the drawers and other hidden places to discover amazing work by gallery artists that you can buy. This week he found himself happily lost in a forest full of Scott Kiefer's richly detailed etchings, linocuts and monotypes. Enjoy!

Scott Kiefer is a Michigan-based printmaker, working primarily in intaglio etching, aquatint, and monotype. CPC has shown and sold his beautiful work for over 20 years.
Hillside, etching & aquatint, 11 x 14 inches (plate), $140
Horned Owl, etching & aquatint, 4 x 5 inches (plate), $65
Left: Low Land, etching & aquatint, 4 x 5 inches (plate), $60
Right: Maine Coon, etching & aquatint, 4 x 5 inches (plate), $75
I began producing etchings at Triton College in River Grove Illinois in the mid 1980’s. I aim to capture the essence of isolated wooded scenes deep in the forest, rendering the texture and pattern of trees and roots and passageways in all their beauty. My hope is to take the viewer out of their everyday routine and transport them into the peaceful world of wild nature, with few traces of human life. I also apply this approach to Cityscapes and Animal subjects. - Scott Kiefer
Winter Sleep, etching & aquatint, 8 x 5 inches (plate), $75
My Intaglio limited edition prints use a combination of line etching, aquatint, and dry point
applied to a zinc plate. I use very stiff ink along with a rag wiping technique that retains plate tone, which I can manipulate to control the highlights of the plate while leaving other parts of the printed image darker. This results in a rich quality of light and atmosphere for each finished print. I spend many hours working on the printing plate. The use of a magnifying glass assures the capture of every detail. -Scott Kiefer

At this time, with things at a stand still, I
sit back and reflect on my past creative efforts and see that my realistic art
has enhanced so many lives. I hope that my work inspires one to contemplate past feelings of better times, as well as spark early memories.

We will discuss tools and materials such as adhesives, book cloth, board, and paper types as well as techniques such as folding, sewing and gluing. Students will explore different types of stitches and basic structures, coming away with several of their own sample books that are ready to use including pamphlet stitches, accordion books, Japanese side-stitch and more! Classes will be taught in weekly live Zoom meetings and will be supplemented with recorded demo videos as needed. A materials list will be provided via email upon registration.

Other great instafeeds we are watching: @prettyininkpress, @dugoodpress, @tanekeyaword, @blackwomenofprint, @latoyahobbs, @blackboxpress..... check them out.

The CPC studio is prioritizing programming to address systemic racism and the general lack of diversity within the printmaking community. A new residency open to women and trans individuals of color is underway and will be formally announced in September.

The CPC celebrates printmaking as a form of resistance, and is seeking partnerships with other organizations that champion current movements and educate young people. We are very much looking forward to working with Embarc this fall to provide virtual learning experiences for low-income high school students.

If you missed our email featuring the work of Amos P. Kennedy Jr.Steve PrinceAaron Coleman, and Stephen Wiggins, it is now ARCHIVED so you can revisit it any time, or just click on their names here to visit their websites.

COVID-19 Updates ————————————
We are so excited to see our socially distanced, masked, resident and member artists back in the shop working the presses and giving the space a much-missed jolt of creative energy! For everyone's safety, studio time must be scheduled via the shared CPC Google calendar and only 2 artists may work in the main, front area of the shop at the same time, with an additional artist in the middle studio. The CPC is fully stocked with hand sanitizer, wipes, and disinfectant sprays for all work areas.

We continue to monitor Covid numbers in the city and believe we still have to make sacrifices in order to keep our community safe and healthy. With that in mind, we have made the decision to resume in-studio group classes in October. We will continue to host online classes throughout the fall. We are excited to announce that we will offer in-person private and semi-private classes in September in all media! Call or email the studio for more information.

To view work in the gallery, you can schedule a gallery appointment by emailing the studio. All visitors are required to wear a mask covering their mouth and nose. Those interested in purchasing work in the gallery online may still do so via Paypal or credit card by phone. Please email [email protected] to make arrangements. We offer either private, sanitary curbside pickup (free) or secure shipping ($25-$45 for domestic packages).

Stay healthy, be safe, and spread some ink.
