Social Concerns Committee:
Summer Garden Market to Highlight First Lutheran Gardeners
First Lutheran Church gardeners will again be spotlighted this summer as the annual First Fruits and Garden Market will be held beginning on the weekend of June 28th and 29th. Beginning on that date and continuing throughout the summer and into the fall, church gardeners will have the opportunity to contribute extra locally grown produce to the market. This will include vegetables, fruits and baked goods. This produce will then be made available to First Lutheran worshippers prior to and after the services on Saturday evening and Sunday mornings. Those members obtaining this produce are asked to provide a free-will donation. The funds will then go to the Lutheran World Relief.
Gardeners are asked to bring their produce in on Friday during the day or on Saturday afternoon prior to the 5:00 p.m. service. Produce can also be brought in prior to the 8:15 and 10:15 service on Sunday. The donated items should be placed on a cart in the narthex of the church. Products should be clean and neatly arranged as they would be for a regular Farmers Market.
Most gardeners often find themselves with extra produce. Why not bring those extra produce to the market at First Lutheran. By doing so, it will make the market a wonderful event throughout the summer.
Bread for the World (June 14th and 15th) – FLC is a Covenant Congregation of Bread for the World, a nondenominational Christian organization, founded by Dana College alumnus, Art Simon. BFW does research and proposes policies to Congress to address hunger, locally, nationally and globally.
Before and after services on the weekend of June 14th and 15th, congregation members are invited to sign letters to our representatives in Congress, specifically encouraging them to fully fund the domestic Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Members may also either take copies for signing at home or write letters of their own.
TeamMates (June 21st and 22nd) – Local representatives of TeamMates, the mentoring program for 3rd to 12th graders that Coach Tom Osborne and his wife, Nancy founded, will present information at each service. Their hope is to interest individuals in volunteering to become mentors.
