eNEWS is an electronic newsletter sent on a regular basis to families and  friends of Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach, Florida.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury
mcoury@fatherlopez.org

Back in the 1300's, Geoffrey Chaucer penned the phrase, "all good things must come to an end". So it is with this history-making year at Father Lopez Catholic High School. Most of our readers already know that we ventured into uncharted territory this year when we officially enrolled 438 students. This was the largest number of students to study at Lopez since the 1959 founding of our school in Daytona Beach.

Leading the way was a small, but very talented and kind-hearted group of seniors. It was a bittersweet experience last week to see the ranks of our Green Wave alumni grow by 70 as our Class of 2014 graduated. They were cheered on by family and friends, faculty, staff and school officials.

Our Valedictorian, Jason West (Princeton University), and our Salutatorian, Sidney Jackson (Johns Hopkins University) delivered eloquent speeches that made all of us proud. At the Baccalaureate Mass, Alyssa Husbands (Stetson University) and Zachary Wilson (Florida A&M University) read their impressive award-winning essays on what their Catholic education had meant to them.

For your reading pleasure, I am proud to provide you with a copy of the program booklet from our Fifty-Fifth Commencement Exercises. Please take some time to review this booklet. You will note that our recent graduates were offered acceptances to 113 colleges and universities throughout Florida and 31 other states, as well as in the District of Columbia. Take a look at the following pages that detail some 140 scholarships that had been awarded to our graduates. The total value of these scholarships is $4,848,376. That is a real tribute to these youngsters, their parents, and to their teachers and coaches at Father Lopez.

The facts indicate that our adventurous graduates are well prepared for collegiate studies. They are in demand by many colleges, and they are rewarded with a plethora of scholarships. However, if simply preparing our students for college was all that we did at Father Lopez, then we would have failed in our mission as Catholic educators.  Our greater responsibility in partnering with parents is to educate the whole person and to help our students grow in faith and knowledge.

God has blessed our students in so many ways.  We try to impress upon them that the greatest way for one to thank the Giver is to learn how to share the gift.  That is at the core of the Lopez experience, and that is part of the added value that one receives in your Catholic high school. (Please see related article on Lopez receiving the Blessed Mother Teresa Award.)

We are very proud of our most recent graduates.  I know that you join me in congratulating them and praying for their continued success. May our Heavenly Father continue to bless them, and may He bless all members of this wonderful family that is Father Lopez Catholic High School.
WITH GREAT APPRECIATION
At Father Lopez, we are blessed to have many talented, caring and wonderful role models for our students. The fifty-nine members of our faculty, staff and administration are to be commended for the passion they bring with them daily for the benefit of the students at Father Lopez. Their presence enhances the atmosphere of "family" in our school.

As in all families, there are mixed emotions when family members move on. This is true when we say farewell to our graduates, and it is true when we say auf Wiedersehen ("farewell, until we meet again") to our professional colleagues.

With the above in mind, we extend our appreciation to the following Lopez family members who will not be returning next year. We cherish the gift that each has been to our school community, and we ask for God's blessings upon them as they move on to write the next chapter in their lives.

GRADUATION HIGHLIGHTS
Among the many highlights from graduation weekend were the commencement addresses given by Valedictorian Jason West (Princeton University) and Salutatorian Sidney Jackson (Johns Hopkins University).
'14 Valedictoran and Salutatorian

In the special awards category, seven students were nominated by members of the school's faculty, staff and administration for the President's Award. This is the highest honor bestowed by the school upon a member of the graduating class. This award is given to one senior female and one senior male who most closely represent the ideal graduate of Father Lopez. This year's recipients were Rebecca Blais (University of Notre Dame) and Jason West (pictured top left).

Twenty seniors were nominated for the Crest of the Wave Award. Requirements include attending our school for a minimum of three years and demonstrating exemplary qualities of character, service, leadership, scholarship, and co-curricular involvement. The six graduates recognized as a Crest of the Wave were: Jasmine Alson (University of Florida); Benjamin Ginsberg (Skidmore College); Sidney Jackson (pictured top right); Ashnel Jean-Mary (University of Florida); Kevin Kelly (Florida State University); and, Alan McFarland (University of Florida).

LOPEZ RECEIVES BLESSED MOTHER TERESA AWARD
Father Lopez Catholic High School is honored to be the recipient of the 2014 Blessed Mother Teresa Award. The prestigious award, presented by Bishop John Noonan at Baccalaureate Mass, was in recognition of service work done by Lopez students.
Lee Sayago, Principal of Father Lopez Catholic High School, commented, "The Homeless Lock-Out has become a tradition to kick off Catholic Schools Week. After participating in the Million Meal Challenge in Orlando last November, we were inspired to host one on our campus. We wanted every student to have the opportunity to experience the amazing work that is being done by Catholic Relief Services and Helping Hands. We wanted to give them a sense of the global community in a 'hands-on' way. We also wanted to use the funds raised by the students to provide them with more opportunities to do good work. Nearly $6,800 was raised last year during the Homeless Lock-Out. We clearly FED THE HUNGRY by both the Million Meal Challenge and the Empty Bowls projects; we CLOTHED THE NAKED with the donations of items given to the shelter and pregnancy crisis center. Although we did not actually SHELTER THE HOMELESS, our lock-out is educational as well as experiential and gives the students a deeper understanding of homelessness and the issues surrounding this problem in our community."

Our Campus Minister, Marie Gallo-Lethcoe, coordinated these acts of mercy for our school community.
