Caring for Koi During the Cooler Months
In Northeast Florida, koi ponds experience mild winters compared to colder climates, so freezing is rarely a concern. However, the cooler temperatures still affect your koi’s behavior and feeding needs. As water temperatures drop, koi enter a state of torpor, where their metabolism slows down significantly. They become less active, often resting near the bottom of the pond, and their need for food decreases.
Monitoring water temperature is the key to proper koi care during winter. If the water remains above 60°F, you can continue feeding as usual. When temperatures dip between 50°F and 60°F, switch to a cold-water-formulated food that is easier for koi to digest. Once water temperatures fall below 50°F, stop feeding entirely, as their metabolism is too slow to process food effectively.
| |
|
In Florida's mild winters, feeding is often unnecessary, even in cooler months, as koi can sustain themselves without additional food. By adjusting feeding habits to water temperature, you can help your koi stay healthy and thrive through the season.
