Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center Reading Room Receives Generous Donation

Mary Ann and Daniel Mulvihill-Decker have donated over 20 books, leaflets, and reports from the library of Mary Ann's father, William Mulvihill, a renowned East End environmentalist, who, with his sister Dorothy, preserved nearly 125 acres of woodland and wetland area known as the Great Swamp. The Great Swamp skirts the Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike just to the west of the Long Pond Greenbelt, serving as an important source of freshwater for the greenbelt's fragile coastal plain ponds ecosystem. Books on frogs and salamanders, the Napeague dunes, vernal ponds, Little Fish Pond, poisonous snakes, salt marshes, Sagg Swamp, and mushrooms, along with many other topics, are included in the donation.

The Reading Room is open during regular Nature Center hours: Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. starting Saturday, May 2, through the end of October. Thank you to Mary Ann and Daniel for your thoughtful gift.

Adopt a Patch Orientation

Saturday, May 2

10:00 AM

We are very excited for our sixth year of our Adopt-A-Patch program for the Vineyard Field restoration. Through a great suggestion by FLPG Member Greg Bellafiore, Adopt a Patch was initiated in 2021 as a way to eradicate the remaining invasive autumn olive shrubs that continue to grow in Vineyard Field. Each volunteer is allotted a section of the field (their “patch”) where they will cut back any new sprouts at least once a month during the growing season. We have learned after years of mowing trails that repetitive cutting eradicates this noxious plant. Interested in adopting a patch? Join us on May 2nd at 10am when we will be marking out everyone's 2026 patch, and identifying the invasive autumn olive and reviewing how best to remove. Meet at the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO) parking lot, 377 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton. Please bring gloves and dress against ticks. All Ages and Skills are Welcome! Adopt a Patch Work Sessions continue on the 1st Saturday of every month through November. Feel free to join at any time! For more information or to confirm attendance, contact Greg Bellafiore at 631-283-1200.
