Join FLPG for the Great East End Clean-Up

The Great East End Clean-Up, a volunteer-based program to remove litter and debris from public areas throughout Southampton Town, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27. Last year over 550 volunteers removed 7.76 tons of garbage and bulk items from beaches, parks, trails, and roadsides. Southampton's Treasured Trees

Sunday, April 27, 2:00 p.m.

As we recognize Arbor Day, we pay tribute to some of the Town’s longest-standing residents, the “lopp” trees. As living historic artifacts dating back to the colonial days, they offer a glimpse of the Town’s 17th century settlement. These trees, especially white oaks, were used to mark property boundaries and significant natural resources throughout Southampton. Join Town Historian Julie Greene to learn more about the history of these lopp trees and where they still exist today.

New Lake Management Plan for Long Pond and Little Long Pond Kicks Off with Stakeholder Meeting

Left to right: Frank Quevedo, Exec. Dir., SOFO; Peter Wilson, Jody Winer, and Sandra Ferguson of FLPG; Juliana Quant, CPF; Doreen Johnston and Dai Dayton of FLPG; and Luke Gervase, GEI Consultants. Behind the camera: Ted Chu, FLPG.

The Long Pond and Little Long Pond Lake Management Plan stakeholder kick-off meeting took place at the LPG Nature Center and via Zoom on Wednesday, March 19th. Representatives of the Southampton Town Trustees, Southampton Town CPF department, FLPG and guests heard from Juliana Quant, CPF Senior Environmental Analyst, about

the $24,000 grant from the NYSDEC supporting the study and the project's overall goals. Luke Gervase of GEI Consultants, the firm conducting the ponds’ evaluations, also presented details of how the necessary data will be gathered over the next two years, beginning with mapping the depths and shapes of the ponds’ underwater terrain, slated to start in April. GEI will also be conducting plant surveys, water quality analysis, and biological assessments. This information will underpin recommendations for protecting existing ecological conditions, preventing invasive species introduction and spread, and promoting education and outreach projects. Water quality reports of the water samples collected by FLPG members from both ponds since 2006 and evaluated by the Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program have been shared with GEI.

Poxabogue Field In the News

Click here to read Christopher Gangemi’s excellent East Hampton Star article on FLPG’s effort to save Poxabogue Field as a natural grassland. And click here to see our recent action alert. We urge everyone to write the Town Board asking for open space designation for Poxabogue Field.

Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara and Councilman Michael Iasilli on the day of their recent tour of the Long Pond Greenbelt. During the visit FLPG President Dai Dayton highlighted locations of special interest and concern such as Round Pond, Poxabogue Field, and the Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center, as well as many other Greenbelt features and sites. We send our thanks to them for coming for a firsthand view of the Long Pond Greenbelt.
