Poxabogue County Park

2025 Eastern Bluebird Box Monitoring Results

by Frank Quevedo, Director SOFO

The seven bluebird boxes at Poxabogue County Park, monitored and maintained by the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO) resulted in zero bluebirds nesting in 2025. There were three boxes occupied by American tree swallows yielding a total of eight fledglings.  One box had a pair of Northern house wrens, but no eggs were hatched. Two boxes had tree swallow nesting material in them, but no egg or fledgling activity was observed. One box was completely empty. Even though no Eastern bluebirds had nested at this site, it was still a successful season as tree swallows and house wrens are cavity nesting birds and both are native species to Long Island.

Full Moons and Gong Serenades

The ancient origins of the gong date back to Asia 6,000 years ago. Used in ceremonies and rituals, the sound and vibration signaled important events, be it religious, spiritual or for communicating. The sound can travel for miles.

Modern science provides a physiological basis for the effects observed in ancient practices. Primarily through the principles of brainwave entrainment and sympathetic resonance. The gong's vibrations create an immersive environment that bypasses the intellectual mind and speaks directly to the body and subconscious, facilitating a profound state of rest and self-healing.

FLPG Board Member, Doreen Johnston, has been serenading us with her lovely gong following the last three full moon hikes. We look forward to additional sound baths at many future hikes. Stay tuned for future dates to come.

A Festive Time Had By All

Thank you to all of you who joined us at our Holiday Party last month at Almond Restaurant. It was a great time to celebrate our accomplishments in the Greenbelt as well as look forward to new projects for 2026.

We were also happy to be able to honor three volunteers for their dedication to the preservation and stewardship of the Long Pond Greenbelt. Greg Bellafiore and Peg Conklin were awarded 2025 Volunteer of the Year awards for their tireless efforts on our Adopt A Patch program as well as many other of our projects. Jean Mc Dermott was also recognized as the 2025 Champion of the Greenbelt for her diligent work as Secretary, Treasurer, Hike Leader and Volunteer over the last 15 years. Thank you Greg, Peg & Jean and all of our other Board Members and Volunteers who continue to support the wonderful Long Pond Greenbelt.
