Photos of Eagles and More at Poxabogue Pond

Photographer and Friend of the Long Pond Greenbelt, Marianne Barnett, spent an hour at the Poxabogue Pond Nature Blind on February 7th and shared her observations and photos,

"Was very exciting! A juvenile Bald Eagle circled and landed in nearby tree. Then an adult did a fly around and landed in another tree. The Belted Kingfisher again resented my presence in the hide and alerted everyone of my presence. A blue heron flew in and gave me a show before seeing me and went shrieking off in disgust. I was so quiet too! Bluebirds were at sunset, so pretty lighting on them!"

Also seen and photographed were a female Common Merganser and a Hermit Thrush.

Marianne was also able to capture the Northern Lapwing recently at Sagg Pond. Another great find in the Lond Pond Greenbelt. https://www.27east.com/southampton-press/luck-of-the-irish-northern-lapwing-2338907/

Friday, March 14 – Full Worm Moon Hike, 7:30 P.M.8:30 P.M. Co-sponsored by Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt and South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO). The full “Worm Moon” was given its name by the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. At the time of this spring moon, the ground begins to soften and earthworm castings reappear, inviting the return of robins. In some regions, this is also known as the “Sap Moon”, as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins. Join us on this leisurely-paced hike through Vineyard Field’s open field trails. Meet at the SOFO Museum parking lot, 377 Bridgehampton Turnpike, 200 yards north of the RR tracks. Leader: Jean Mc Dermott, 631-599-239.

Saturday, March 15 – Old Farm Road Cleanup, 8:00 A.M. Help clean up the roadside along FLPG’s adopted road. Meet at Poxabogue Park, 191 Old Farm Road, Sagaponack. Bring gloves, bags provided. For more information, contact Peter Wilson, 631-553-1393.

Friday, March 21 – Long Island Natural History Conference, 8:00 A.M.–4:00 P.M. Stony Brook University.

Saturday, Mach 22 – Earth Hour. 8:30PM9:30 P.M.

Saturday, March 29 - Searching For Woodcocks. 6:30 P.M. Sponsored by the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO). The American Woodcock is well-camouflaged with brown dappled leaf tones, and its foraging behavior keeps the bird’s movements close to the ground, making it hard to spot during the daytime. But at dawn and again at dusk during late winter and early spring, these birds really put on a show. Join SOFO for a short walk through the field and forest of Poxabogue County Park at dusk. As darkness falls, we will listen for the American Woodcock male’s “peent” call and watch for his aerial acrobatics as he tries to woo a female. This program has limited enrollment.

Walk Leader: Melanie Meade, SOFO Education Director

This program is for adults, teens, and children ages 10+.

For non-members, there is a $15 fee for adults and a $10 fee for children for this program. This program fee will also provide non-members with free admission to the museum on a day of their choice. Members are free. Advanced reservations are required for all events. RSVP: https://sofo.org/calendar/searching-for-woodcocks/
