President's Message:
Welcome to 2025!
As we eagerly look forward to the upcoming winter season. I am grateful to all of you for joining or renewing your membership.
Along with the customary bigger trips, we are planning the usual one day XC skiing and snowshoeing outings when conditions allow. Be aware of last minute email notices since the weather is so unpredictable.
What you can rely on, is our ongoing tradition of an Annual Banquet which will be held Saturday, April 26th at The Point, owned by the Springside Inn, in Auburn. It is always a fun gathering & good time to share the past 2024-25 experiences.
Later in January, we will form an elections committee to recruit new officers & board members. While I hope you stay warm & cozy this winter, consider getting out of your comfort zone to join our board (or maybe being on a board naturally helps you thrive!). We have a talented, experienced group that works together but needs replacements. Remember that learning experiences help keep us engaged and young.
Have a safe & Happy New Year!
~ Linda

FLSC December Meeting & Christmas Party
About 60 people joined us on Dec 3 at the Elks Club for the annual holiday party and club meeting. Pulled pork and mac and cheese were catered by Humphrey’s BBQ, and many board members brought additional goodies to share.
A number of door prizes were given out, announcements were made, and we prepared for the new ski season together.
It is likely our 2026 big trip will be to Park City, UT in early March.
Wishing everyone a wonderful 2025!

The Man Behind The Maps
Hardcover – January 1, 2019
by Jason Blevins Ben Farrow (Author)
4.8
4.8 out of 5 stars
(981) 4.6 on Goodreads 89 ratings
Featuring over 200 ski resort trail maps hand-painted by one legendary artist, this beautiful 292-page hardcover coffee table book is the first and definitive compilation of the art created by James Niehues during his 30-year career. Eight geographically themed chapters form the heart of the book, offering you full-page images of the world’s most iconic ski areas including Alta, Arapahoe Basin, Aspen, Breckenridge, Big Sky, Deer Valley, Heavenly, Jackson Hole, Jay Peak, Killington, Kirkwood, Lake Louise, Mammoth, Mont Tremblant, Mt. Bachelor, Park City, Revelstoke, Snowbird, Squaw Valley, Stowe, Sugarloaf, Sun Valley, Taos, Telluride, Whistler Blackcomb and other renowned resorts. In engaging narrative that complements the maps,
| |
Niehues reveals his exacting technique, which demands up to six weeks to complete a single painting. He then walks you through the step-by-step process for mapping Breckenridge, sharing everything from aerial photographs, to numerous pencil sketches, to in-progress builds, to the final trail map illustration. The magic of the finished product is captured in both a foreword by pioneering big-mountain skier Chris Davenport and the perspectives of other ski industry insiders. Every detail was taken into consideration: Italian art-quality printing, heavier weight matte coated paper and a lay-flat binding. A pencil sketch of Big Sky, Montana, graces the cover and features anti-scratch protection. The book is 11.5” tall and opens to a spread of 24” wide, the perfect size to showcase the biggest ski mountains in the world.

Important Travel information!!!!
Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID will be required
for domestic flights.
Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler’s driver’s license or state issued ID must be a REAL ID to fly within the United States. If you don’t have a REAL ID, you’ll need to use another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, when flying domestically.
An enhanced NYS driver’s license is a REAL ID – if you have one, you’re all set! If not, update soon! To check, the word “Enhanced” will be above your name on the front of your license, and there will be special passport-like scan coding on the back.
See how you can get yours ahead of the deadline! (Click here)
