The Match
Best wishes to our many fourth year medical students choosing Family Medicine. Rank deadlines are coming quick and we hope all the seniors find the perfect match for the residency of their dreams. Thank you to the many faculty who have supported students throughout their years at UMass Chan. Your role modeling and mentorship is critical to sharing the joys of Family Medicine and encouraging others to find their passion in the field.

Graduate Medical Education
Fellowship Match
Congratulations to our fellowships as they have had quite successful matches.

The Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship welcomes Shaun Toomey, MD.  He will be the new HPM fellow for 2022-23. He was an internal medicine resident here at UMass and is currently a pulmonary critical-care fellow who will finish in June 2022 before starting with us this summer. Dr. Reidy shares he is an incredible human being and skilled yet humble clinician, and we are very lucky to have him join our team.

Sports Medicine also enthusiastically welcomes their matched fellows. Emily Eshelman, DO, is well known to many of us as a PGY-3 Family Medicine and Chief Resident at Fitchburg. She went to Holyoke for undergrad and then got her MPH from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. She went to PCOM for Medical School and is a DO. Adam Ridley, MD, is currently a PGY-3 at the Medical University of South Carolina Family Medicine Residency Program. He is originally from Westborough, MA. He went to BC for undergraduate studies and then onto South Carolina for Medical School.

Preventive Medicine Fellowship welcomes WFMR own: Pratiksha Yalakkishettar, MD, a third year resident at the HFHC, and Brittany Reid, MD, third year resident at the BFHC. Congratulations to all!

FHCW HIV and Viral Hepatitis Fellowship welcomes WFMR own as well: Laurel Banach, MD, third year resident at the FHCW. Congratulations!

Our department and community are fortunate to have such outstanding physicians staying in our midst. With much gratitude to the faculty and program directors, as well as our learners, for all the work that goes into recruitment – soon we will have our residency match and behavioral health fellow announcements as well!  Best wishes all around.

Faculty Development
The Annual Professional Reviews will occur again this Spring with meetings likely to occur in May. As we continue to face the current COVID surge, we will hold off the mentorship meeting planned for later this month. The mentorship program will begin again following the faculty APR with a kick off late in the summer or in the early Fall. Consider your mentorship needs and make sure to include them in your APR form and discuss with your supervisor.

Listening sessions for Vision 2030 are wrapping up with a few more through the beginning of February. Thank you to everyone who has participated. We have gathered important information about perspectives from across the department. Feel free to add further comment by emailing to stacy.potts@umassmemorial.org or Philip.day@umassmed.edu

White Belt Training Opportunity - Upcoming LEAN Training
UMassMemorial Health is committed to disseminate LEAN management tools to all physicians and clinicians and offer leadership development to our providers. Practicing LEAN principles enables team building and promotes respect to our fellow caregivers. It’s a platform that fosters innovation and improves the care we provide to our patients — as well as to advance our own work environment. LEAN is practiced by many caregivers in our health care system. Physicians and clinicians should be educated and have the tools needed to implement successful huddles, idea board systems and process improvement efforts. Our department will offer LEAN white belt training through two upcoming grand rounds. The first session will be a great refresher for those trained many years ago and the second session will include important updates including how to use Innovation Station. For individuals who have not done LEAN training in the past, this is an opportunity to meet the institution's requirement for white belt certification.
  • January 25th, 12-1pm: LEAN White Belt: Part 2 - Innovation Station
If you are unable to make these trainings and are in need of certification, additional
Lean White Belt training registration is available through E-learning 4U.

Contact student leader Tyler Healy (tyler.healy@umassmed.edu) for needs across the 6 programs or Danielle Heims-Waldron (danielle.heimswaldron@umassmed.edu) for Monday night’s Epworth program.
Frankly Speaking Podcast

A weekly Podcast series covering newsworthy topics in primary care medicine.

Please join us for an overview: Chronic pain affects 20% of people in the United States, and chronic low back pain is the most common cause of chronic pain. Although some treatments can reduce the severity of the pain, the persistence of chronic low back pain is a source of frustration for both patients and clinicians. Join us to discuss how behavioral and psychological therapy should be part of the treatment for chronic low back pain and how new approaches may be much more effective than existing therapies. Guest: Alan Ehrlich, MD, FAAFP, presents: "A Brainy Approach to Treating Chronic Low Back Pain". - Frankly Speaking Ep 258.

COVID-19 UPDATES

COVID Global
There are more than 307 million cases of COVID around the world. People with Omicron often develop a scratchy or sore throat along with nasal congestion, a dry cough and muscle pain, especially low back pain. Symptoms are similar to the common cold and to the Delta Variant.

COVID Pre-procedure Home Testing
Beginning shortly, the system will begin at home testing for patients scheduled for procedures. The goal is that the information is available for all groups and the testing instructions will be available for patients in multiple languages. All pre-procedure testing must be completed within 72 hours of the scheduled procedure. The testing is PCR testing and results must be visible in EPIC.
