Department Awards

Each year, the department recognizes individuals who have contributed to the department’s mission of service and teaching. One of the teaching awards will honor a faculty member for outstanding work in Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice. We are seeking your nominations for these recognitions. These awards are important for the faculty and call for thought and reflection on those who deserve recognition. A nomination should include the person’s name, the award you are nominating them for, and a brief paragraph describing why the individual is deserving. Written nominations will be shared with the leadership team in advance of the team’s October meeting. Nominees will be presented, discussed, and voted on by the Leadership Team. Awardees will be honored on November 15th from12:00 - 1:00pm at the Department's Annual Awards Ceremony (in lieu of Grand Rounds. The awards are: Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity Excellence, Education, Outstanding Community Clinician and the Chair Award.

Focus of the Week - Community

From Hugh Silk:

I am honored to be serving as the Vice Chair of Community Health for the department. I learned a lot through the process of being selected. This shaped my vision for this role and over the next year, after a listening tour with each division and health center to hear your goals and aspirations for community health, I plan to assess the opportunities to do such things as:

  • select a Community Health Champion from each health center, division, and from community docs to serve on our Community Health Steering Community
  • assist our Community Health Champions to engage colleagues and residents to partner with their communities to continue and/or find meaningful projects and research that improves the health of our communities
  • align with the new VISTA curriculum goals that include community health and call upon role models in our department to mentor and teach students about the importance of community health
  • create a robust date base of the community engagement that our department already does and update this with new projects to act as tool for sharing ideas and coupling learners with faculty
  • leverage the actions and principles of community health to address health equity, social justice, diversity and inclusion issues in our department, the school, our community and with our most vulnerable citizens
  • engage with the clinical system as the only true department of community health to lead and partner with other specialties, and with community organizations and local government to meaningfully improve our community's health, wellness, and future outcome

We have a Community Health Group which meets monthly and will inform our work. If you are interested in joining, please email Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu

The Population and Community Health Clerkship will be held October 24-November 4. Our community-engaged faculty will illuminate the value of considering community as a unit of care and help our learners think about interventions that help populations achieve healthier lives.

I am pleased to share that the UMass Chan has increased its support of the important role of the 3rd year clerkship directors. Mary has served as Benedict's Medical Director for five years and I am grateful for her leadership. Mary has led Benedict to excellence in quality and patient care. Anyone from the Benedict practice who is interested in stepping into this role should contact me for more information at Josephine.Fowler@umassmemorial.org.
