Message From the Chair
I am pleased to report that COVID hospitalizations and overall hospital medicine census are down enough that we were able to stand down our Family Medicine inpatient surge team at the end of last week. Thanks to the staff and clinicians of Hahnemann, Benedict, and Barre practices; each contributed effort to staff the team. Special thanks to Mike Maddaleni, Nick Hajj, Henry DelRosario, Erin Cathcart, and Stefanie Russell for pitching in to staff the team. And of course, none of this would have been possible without the flexibility of, and support from, the entire FMIS team. Family Medicine’s effort has been recognized and celebrated as incredibly helpful to the overall surge effort. Thanks for the team effort, and a job well done!

Focus of the Week - Community
Mindful of Black History Month
National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was observed on February 7th. A goal of CDC’s Let’s Stop HIV Together campaign is empowering communities, partners, and healthcare providers to work together to reduce HIV stigma and promote prevention, testing, and treatment among all affected communities, including Black/African American people. According to CDC’s latest data, in 2019, Blacks/African Americans accounted for 42% of HIV diagnoses, despite making up 12% of the U.S. population. Racism, discrimination, and mistrust in the health care system may affect whether Black people seek or receive HIV prevention services or engage in HIV treatment and care. To continue to reduce the burden of HIV, people need access to culturally competent health services that are free of stigma and discrimination. Together, when we work to overcome barriers to HIV testing, prevention and treatment services, we reduce HIV-related disparities and health inequities in Black communities. To learn more, check out the Blacks/African Americans and HIV page on NEAETC's online HIV Resource Library
