The STFM Ethics and Humanities Collaborative is excited to announce the 2023 STFM Annual Poetry and Prose Contest. The theme of this year's contest is "Wisdom and Wordcraft: Stories of Healers and Their Art."
Entries are limited to one entry per category. The three submission categories are:
- Prose—can be in the form of a story, narrative, or essay and should be limited to 1000 words.
- Poetry—can be in any form
- Other short writing—can include 55 word stories, haiku, 7 word stories, or cartoons with captions
First and second place will be awarded for each category. The first and the second place prize in each category is $50 each. Winning pieces will be on display at the 2023 STFM Annual Spring Conference
and awardees will have the opportunity to read their works at the Annual Poetry and Prose Reading on Saturday, Saturday, April 29; 6:45–8 pm at the Annual Spring Conference. A congratulatory letter will be sent to their Chair and/or Dean. Winners to be announced prior to the Annual Spring Conference. To be entered into the contest, send a cover sheet and your entry as Word file (not pdf) to tbrazelton@stfm.org by February 17th.

The Co-Editors of the APA journal Families, Systems, & Health seek qualified professionals to serve on our Editorial Board. Editorial Board membership provides an opportunity to make a substantial contribution to the process of science and, for this journal, to curating the literature in integrated care, healthcare, and family systems. We have an engaged and diverse leadership team and look forward to adding several new members in Spring 2023. Consistent with our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, we encourage inquiries and applications from members of minoritized and underrepresented groups. Needed areas of expertise include: pediatrics, addiction medicine, workforce development/interprofessional training, collaborative care management, family systems, nursing, qualitative methods, integrated care in specialty settings, policy research, health services research, and psychiatry.
Editorial Board members’ responsibilities include:
- completing at least 6 high quality manuscript reviews annually
- attending twice annual board meetings (by zoom)
Board members are encouraged to take optional leadership roles on special projects. For example, members have written guest editorials, contributed guest commentary, partnered to guest edit a special issue or section, presented on behalf of the journal in webinars or conference venues, and participated in a workgroup to address equity, diversity, and inclusion within the journal. Families, Systems, & Health has a diverse readership including both academics and professionals working in the health care industry. A key focus of the journal has been to promote translational science and accessibility of the work. Thus, we seek professionals from both within and outside traditional academic settings who can demonstrate their fit with this mission. Additional desired qualifications include: past service on an editorial board or the completion of at least 5 ad hoc reviews, track record of at least 5 peer-reviewed publications over the past 5 years, and any additional evidence of experience in scholarly writing and translational work (e.g., book chapters, conference presentations, blogs, podcasts, etc. regarding empirical topics). Mick Huppert Awards!
The department is revising how Mick Huppert Awards are awarded. For those who remember Mick, a long-time faculty member and AHEC leader who died in 2017, his two passions were family medicine and community health. We are revising the award to foster student interest in family medicine during the first year of medical school, engage in a community project, and build a connection with a family medicine mentor who will also be recognized with this award. Please see the attached application for more details. This application is being shared with students as well. The due date for applications is March 10th to Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu.

Fellowship Match! - Mark Skiba, MD, PhD, has matched into our Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Western New England College and obtained a PhD in Mammalian Genetics at Clark University. After postdoctoral research in Molecular Genetics at UMass, Dr. Skiba obtained his MD at UMass Chan Medical School and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UMass. Dr. Skiba has been practicing hospital-based medicine at Milford Regional Medical Center for the last twenty years.
