Message from the Chair

The extreme cold of this past weekend led to activating emergency operations and the Command Center due to frozen pipes and loss of heating on the Memorial campus, primarily in the South building. At peak, 32 beds were out of service due to flooding or lack of heat. Thanks to the many people who worked through the challenging circumstances, and especially to those who stepped in to restore heat and plumbing and repair and clean rooms. As of this morning, heat has been restored in most locations, and 15 beds remain out of service. It is expected that all will be available by tomorrow. The Memorial surgical services were impacted but normal surgery scheduling is planned for tomorrow.

On the other side of the world, the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has claimed at least 5000 lives and left countless more injured or homeless. To those in the UMass and Worcester communities with family and friends in that region, we offer our condolences and support. As specific ways to help are identified, we will communicate them to our FMCH community.

Ending the Public Health Emergency

President Biden announced that he will end the Public Health Emergency on May 11, 2023, related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Medicare Coverage of Telehealth During the PHE:

  • Medicare beneficiaries in any geographic area can receive telehealth services, rather than beneficiaries living in rural areas only
  • Beneficiaries can remain in their homes for telehealth visits reimbursed by Medicare, rather than needing to travel to a health care facility
  • Telehealth visits can be delivered via smartphone in lieu of equipment with both audio and video capability
  • Federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics can provide telehealth services to Medicare beneficiaries (i.e., can be distant site providers), rather than limited to being an originating site provider for telehealth (i.e., where the beneficiary is located)

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 extended these flexibilities through December 31, 2024, regardless of the status of the § 319 PHE; previously these flexibilities were set to expire after 151 days after the end of the § 319 PHE.

Mick Huppert Awards!

The department is revising how Mick Huppert Awards are awarded. For those who remember Mick, a long-time faculty member and AHEC leader who died in 2017, his two passions were family medicine and community health. We are revising the award to foster student interest in family medicine during the first year of medical school, engage in a community project, and build a connection with a family medicine mentor who will also be recognized with this award. Please see the attached application for more details. This application is being shared with students as well. The due date for applications is March 10th to Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu.
