Focus of the Week - Community

Increase your engagement! March 31st is our deadline for adding students to the funding list for Summer Community Health Assistantships. If you’d like to host a student to help you achieve a community health goal, reach out to Heather-Lyn Haley. Now is also the perfect time to start nailing down ideas for Population and Community Health Clerkship teams for fall of 2022. Now is the time for bringing new ideas into the mix and we’d love to hear what you’re thinking.

This Wednesday is Capstone Day, where our fourth year medical students present the outcomes of their longitudinal passion projects, which are often inspired by Community Health educational experiences like the Population and Community Health Clerkship and involvement with the Worcester Free Care Collaborative. This year’s virtual “live” on zoom event begins with a welcome at 8:30am and keynote from Barbara Olendzki, RN, MPH, LDN, who works with many of our students on nutrition-focused projects. There will be a limited selection of oral presentations from 9:00-1:45pm, including Collin McCloskey Leibold’s work with FMCH Assistant Professor Liz Erban on Worcester’s Summer Fitness in the Parks Program as a featured presentation from 12:00-12:15pm.
Posters and recorded presentations are linked and easily browsed from the Capstone Day sharepoint site.  We’re proud to see so many faculty from FMCH on the capstone advisor list, including Linda Cragin, MS , Cynthia Ennis, DO , Elizabeth Erban, MD , Mary Flynn MD, Heather-Lyn Haley, PhD , Susan Hogan, MD, MPH, James Ledwith, MD, Linda Long-Bellil, PhD, JD, Lisa Morris, MS, Barbara Olendzki, RD, MPH, LDN, Michele Pugnaire, MD, Jennifer Reidy, MD, Sara Shields, MD, MS, Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, and Stefan Topolski, MD.

Congratulations to this year’s Mick Huppert Community Health Scholar Award winners. Funding has been provided by the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, the Cape and Islands AHEC via MassAHEC, and the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing. (Note, all are medical students except where identified as GSN.) We are pleased with the growth of this initiative and know that Mick would be delighted at this legacy.

Frankly Speaking Podcast

A weekly Podcast series covering newsworthy topics in primary care medicine.

Please join us for an overview: The clinical literature is filled with new and evolving evidence on the use of e-cigarettes and potential harms. The question of their use as a harm reduction strategy is a hotly debated topic-pitting traditional combustible tobacco with its well-known effect on morbidity and mortality against electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), which although not harmless, are considered less harmful than smoked cigarettes. Recent evidence is emerging on the potential cardiovascular risks posed by newer generations of ENDS with far greater delivery of nicotine. Join us while we discuss the findings from a recent study that examines ENDS use and associated increase rates of erectile dysfunction (ED) and how this information may impact your practice. Guest: Susan Feeney, DNP, FNP-BC, NP, presents: "Bad News for E-Cigarette Users-Possible Link between E-Cigarettes and ED". - Frankly Speaking Ep 267.
