Focus of the Week - Community

If you would like to host a Population and Community Health Clerkship (PCHC) this October and take advantage of having students join you to advance work you are doing with a specific population, now is the time to reach out to [email protected].  The PCHC is an interprofessional community-based course taken by all second year medical and graduate nursing students using service-learning pedagogy.

Faculty and community partners host 4-8 students for two weeks, this year, starting Wednesday, October 20th and ending with presentations on November 1st. Each clerkship focuses on a specific population or community – e.g., recently resettled refugees, people entering the community post-incarceration and seniors at risk of falls. We encourage the students to explore the interprofessional networks that provide care for that community and learn about the roles that each network member plays.

To learn more, view the recent Grand Rounds or presentations from previous years, or reach out to any member of the planning committee, including department members Heather-Lyn Haley, Suzanne Cashman, Linda Cragin and Vanessa Carson-Sasso.  PCHC team descriptions are due by the end of July.
Announcements

Dr. Eric Dickson will be hosting an appreciation event on Tuesday, May 18th at 12 noon for caregivers who have been working remotely since the beginning of the pandemic. To recognize these efforts, he would like a list of accomplishments and pictures (like zoom meeting screenshots).  If you have anything, please submit to [email protected] by May 11th.

FHCW Wednesday Cultural Rounds
The residents at FHCW host the event each Wednesday from 5 – 5:30pm. We welcome a member of the community to talk about their culture and the ways it can impact their health and the care they receive. The sessions are informal and involve a robust Q&A. Through these weekly discussions, we hope to promote cultural humility and the continuous process of learning about perspectives outside of our own in order to improve the care we provide. We welcome anyone interested in joining us each week at the link below: https://umassmed.zoom.us/j/91563174994pwd=Um1MVWdPalloMWE2V3ptMXB5aDA1dz09.

Research-Oriented Faculty Development Workshop to be presented by Judy Savageau, MPH will lead the second faculty development workshop on May 26th.

Administrative Updates
Given the overall CDC guidance, the high rate of vaccination at UMMS/UMMHC and in Massachusetts, and the rapidly changing recommendations from Mass DPH, GME will suspend the individual reviews of GME graduation and welcome events. GME strongly recommends that you follow the guidelines as closely as you can and exercise particular caution for the safety of family members and other outside guests who may be elderly, frail or immune suppressed, as vaccine is not as effective in these individuals. GME would still prefer that you not have unvaccinated people attending. It is your responsibility to collect the attestation forms from any guests in the event that contact tracing is needed. The UMMS Infection Control team remains available for consultation to any department that would like individualized advice.
Wellness Resources

The Wellness Committee would like to organize a few informal outdoor gatherings. We have all been isolated and working hard for more than one year now. Our hope is to give faculty and staff in the department a chance to connect in-person, in safe and healthy way. Please take 2 minutes to complete the attached survey.

The Caring for the Caregiver Program provides resources such as the Caregiver Support Line (508-334-HELP) and The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which offers a variety of services and supports (including virtual peer support and wellness tips.
