Message from the Chair

Thanks in advance to Dennis Dimitri, MD and Liz Erban, MD, Frank Domino, MD and his practice colleagues and Fred Baker, MD for being willing to partner with us on the pilot year of a Scribe Fellowship. The four Scribe Fellows come from our Bacc-MD and other pipeline programs designed to strengthen the likelihood of medical school acceptance for diverse and educationally disadvantaged students.  The Fellows will also participate in academic enrichment and other learning opportunities during this gap-year experience. Steve Earls, MD is advising on this pilot.

Focus of the Week - Community

Busy summer for community health
Gardens are not the only thing growing this summer! Two dozen Rural and Urban Health Pathway students have connected through us to help community-engaged projects to flourish as they benefit from the energy and time these committed students are able to devote. Watch for the eager faces of our learners:
  • At the AIDS Project Worcester Mobile Outreach sites in Worcester and Fitchburg.
  • Working on maternal and child health:
  • With the Worcester Healthy Baby Collaborative’s Breastfeeding Working Group with Dr. Shields.
  • Recruiting and training a diverse cohort of birth doulas with Dr. Gracey.
  • Interviewing new moms from Worcester’s Black communities with Dr. Ireland.
  • Addressing food insecurity:
  • in the clinical setting at Family Health Center Worcester with Dr. Gnazzo.
  • in the community at Black Seed Farmers’ Market with Muslim CommunityLink.
  • in systems behind the scenes at CommunityHELP with Chris Cernak from the Office for Clinical Transformation.
  • Working at Clear Path Devens with veterans who have experiences traumatic brain injury.
  • Training as scribes in family medicine clinics… and more!

Watch this space next month as we’ll share details on their work collected and organized by our Emerging Professionals intern, Deisy Rodriguez, using our new Collaboratory software. Congrats to Deisy, who graduated from Clark last weekend. After a brief trip home to celebrate with family in Texas, she’ll be back to help us document and celebrate the range of community-engaged activity that originates in our department, before beginning the Clark masters’ program in community development and planning with a concentration in health equity.  Many of our faculty can expect to hear from Deisy this summer as we collect stories of community-engaged activities that occur as part of the annual Population and Community Health Clerkship. Want your activities to be on the institutional radar for collaboration and funding? Reach out to Collab@umassmed.edu and Deisy will interview you and facilitate entry into the Collaboratory system.

FHCW Wednesday Cultural Rounds
The residents at FHCW host the event each Wednesday from 5 – 5:30pm. We welcome a member of the community to talk about their culture and the ways it can impact their health and the care they receive. The sessions are informal and involve a robust Q&A. Through these weekly discussions, we hope to promote cultural humility and the continuous process of learning about perspectives outside of our own in order to improve the care we provide. We welcome anyone interested in joining us each week at the link below:

The FMCH Town Halls are once again being recorded for those unable to join the live meeting. A separate folder has been created on the FMCH website under Faculty Resources. No password is required to view these recordings. This URL will take you to the Faculty Resources portion of the FMCH website and it can be bookmarked for future reference. https://www.umassmed.edu/fmch/faculty-resources/gr/.
