Focus of the Week - Education
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the many new learners in our midst as July marks the start of the graduate medical education year. Also, congratulations to our residents and fellows who step into their new roles as they progress in their training. Each step along the pathway is a milestone of its own with new challenges and expectations, as well as growing independence. The faculty, and department as a whole, are here to support you in each transition. Welcome and congratulations!
Point of Care Ultrasound Development
Congratulations to Erin Cathcart who will be leading up our POCUS training development for the department. This initiative will ensure training for faculty and residents to expand ultrasound use in our clinical practices. Dr. Cathcart will be convening a working group to explore curriculum development and clinical training. The working group will benefit from a diverse group of faculty, residents, and fellows. If you are interested in working with her on this exciting project, please contact her at erin.cathcart@umassmemorial.org.
Opportunities for faculty development and resident training will be forthcoming as well.
VISTA Curriculum
The VISTA Curriculum go-live is now just about a month away. With the new class of students joining in August there will be the launch of the curriculum revolution. Build teams have transitioned to Course leadership and core faculty teams. Congratulations to the many DFMCH faculty who will play key roles in the new curriculum and much gratitude to all the faculty who have participated in the build of this exciting new curriculum. Deans Flotte and Larkin took a moment to thank the faculty for all the work to date. Please tune into this Vista podcast to hear their message.
Admissions Committee Opportunity
It is critical to have family medicine faculty representation on the medical school admissions committee to provide perspectives that will lead to the admission of students who will successfully pursue primary care careers. Thank you to our current department members, Lisa Gussak and Kristin Mallett, who serve on the committee. The admissions committee is greatly expanding and is looking for additional members. Please see the attached additional information regarding the opportunity.
Faculty Member Scholarly Activity
Lisa Gussak recently had a visual arts submission published in Pulse. Congratulations.

LGBTQIA+ Health Opportunity
Gina Sullivan from the OB/GYN department is working to develop a Rainbow Clinic (likely virtual to start) at UMassMemorial Health. One of the things that might be most helpful for patients is a more comprehensive directory of providers that not only are LGBTQIA+ friendly, but also that have a specific skill set (hormone therapy, surgical interventions, behavioral health support, etc.). Dr. Sullivan would like to establish what services are being offered. If you have a specific skill set and feel comfortable sharing that information, Dr. Sullivan would appreciate hearing from you as we work to make sure that UMass is truly as inclusive and patient-friendly/accessible as possible. Please email gina.sullivan@umassmemorial.org with your interest and/or clinical expertise.
AAME: Facilitating SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) Protocols in Patient-Centered Medical Homes and Primary Care
This research project has been funded by NIAAA (1 R43 AA028453-01)
We are seeking interviews with professionals who are familiar with or have any level of experience with any aspect of the SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) process at their workplace (PCP, BHC, MA, Billing, Front Desk, etc.). Since the new academic year is beginning…. A few reminders about human subjects research and the IRB:
-
Studies involving human subjects typically require review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). If you are unsure whether your study requires review, contact the UMMS IRB for a determination. Information about the IRB and how to submit applications is available by following this link: https://umassmed.edu/ccts/irb/.
-
Our department requires that all IRB applications be submitted for internal review prior to their submission to the IRB. You can find information on the Department’s policies and procedures for review and where to go for questions about your application here. https://umassmed.edu/fmch/research/irb/. There are some notes on those pages about QI and program evaluation projects and when an IRB review ‘might’ be required or not. The IRB is always available to answer your questions about those potentially non-research circumstances.
-
All members of the research team involved in the design, conduct, or reporting of human subjects research must complete training. Online training is provided through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) human subjects training program. Information about the CITI exam and links to training modules are available here: https://umassmed.edu/ccts/irb/CITI-GCP/
- CITI training must be renewed every three years. We urge all potential research team members to begin CITI training well before submitting an IRB application to avoid delays in approval of your application.
From Allison Blodgett, Director of IRB Operations and Heather Strom Tessier, IRB Educational Specialist: eIRB has being upgraded to a cloud-based environment as of late 2021. Several trainings have taken place and the new eIRB website provides information on ‘office hours’ held on a regular basis where you can get ALL of your questions answered! Toward the bottom of the home page (https://umassmed.edu/ccts/irb), there is a notation and calendar with their weekly office hours. They also have many job aides for various components of the IRB documents and submission process.
UMass Chan Single Sign-on:
In order to comply with UMass Chan Medical School data security policies and procedures, the new eIRB system will only be accessible via UMass Chan Medical School Single Sign-On (UMass Chan SSO). This means that individuals need UMass Chan credentials for themselves or their collaborators. If you need help getting UMass Chan credentials, please let Linda Cragin know at Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu
eIRB Upgrade and CITI Training:
The new eIRB will automatically display current CITI training dates for Human Subjects Training, Good Clinical Practice, and Conflict of Interest. In order for the dates to display properly, you must enter your umassmed.edu email in your Institutional Profile in CITI. To do this:
- Go into your CITI account and, using the pulldown menu under your name, select Profiles. Go to the Institutional Profile (not the Member Profile) for University of Massachusetts Worcester, click EDIT PROFILE, and add your UMMS email address as the Institutional Email Address.
- You can continue to use any email you like as your preferred and secondary emails in your Member Profile. However, your umassmed.edu email must be entered in the Institutional Profile.
Request for Publications and Presentations for our FMCH Research Web Pages
Several times a year, but especially as the new academic year begins, we update our department’s research web pages (www.umassmed.edu/fmch/research) with new grants, publications, presentations, student/faculty projects, and many other research-related activities. If you have published something in the past year that hasn’t gotten to the Tuesday Talk, or you’ve given a research presentation, please send those updates to Judy Savageau (judith.savageau@umassmed.edu) and we’ll include them in the next set of updates. We would love to highlight all of your great work!

- Health Leaders suspect that the majority of cases in NE are the B4 and B5 variants.
- COVID risks are increasing in MA.
- There were 1850 new COVID cases reported.
- The total confirmed cases in MA are 1,776,091.
- The 7-day average percent positivity is 7.87%.
- There are 503 hospitalized patients with COVID. Of the 503, 45 are in the ICU and 12 are intubated.
- There are 19,878 confirmed deaths.
Monkeypox Cases in the US
- 767 cases up from 19 cases on June 2.
- The global Monkeypox cases are over 8,100.
- The US has identified two versions of the virus.
- California and NY have the most cases of Monkeypox, 136 and 131 cases respectively.
Monkeypox
Monkeypox numbers are increasing in the US. However, the World Health Organization has not yet classified it as a Health Emergency. Below you will find information on where to find a vaccination for those patients at risk. A limited supply of Monkeypox vaccine is now available in Massachusetts. Massachusetts has been allocated limited doses of the Monkeypox vaccine (JYNNEOS) for post-exposure vaccination of individuals who meet the CDC's eligibility criteria and who live or work in Massachusetts. Health care providers are responsible for performing risk and exposure assessments prior to referring a patient for vaccination. Once a provider confirms eligibility, patients can make their own appointment, noting their provider determined that they are eligible for JYNNEOS. Individuals receiving vaccines will still need to self-monitor for symptoms and prepare to isolate and contact their health care provider if they become ill.
Administration of JYNNEOS at these designated locations is by appointment only:
- Fenway Health (Boston) Call (617) 927-6060 Monday–Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM.
- Massachusetts General Hospital Sexual Health Clinic (Boston) Call (617) 726-2748 Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.
- Boston Medical Center Infectious Disease Clinic (Boston) Call (617) 414-4290 Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.
- Outer Cape Cod Health Services (Provincetown) Call (508) 905-2888 Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
Monkeypox Vaccine Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): For the current outbreak, this approach can be considered as “standard PEP” for Monkeypox.
People can be vaccinated following exposure to Monkeypox to help prevent illness from the Monkeypox virus.
- CDC recommends that the vaccine be given within 4 days from the date of exposure for the best chance to prevent the onset of the disease.
- If given between 4 and 14 days after the date of exposure, vaccination may reduce the symptoms of the disease, but may not prevent the disease.
- When coupled with self-isolation and other prevention measures when symptoms first occur, PEP is important for controlling outbreaks and preventing further transmission of Monkeypox.
