Focus of the Week - Community

PCHC Team Descriptions are due by the end of July! Looking to work with medical students passionate about the population you serve?  Consider developing a Population and Community Health Clerkship (PCHC) for the fall! The PCHC is a team-based, inter-professional, community engaged experience required of all second year medical students and graduate nursing students. Many faculty members in Family Medicine and Community Health host teams each year.  Get all the details and see a list of last year’s FMCH-led teams at https://sites.google.com/view/pchc22/team-leader-resources. This year's PCHC begins October 24 and ends with group presentations on November 4 from 9-11am and 1-3pm. Save the date now! If you’re not already connected to a team, Dr. Haley would like to invite you to serve as a rater at either time on Presentation Day. This two-hour commitment is a great way to familiarize yourself with the program as you plan for future engagement.

Community engagement opportunity: A call for volunteers from Heather-Lyn Haley, who will be staffing the UMass Chan table at the Latin American Festival on the Worcester Common on August 20. If you’re interested in pipeline activities, this is a winner! We especially need volunteers with Spanish-language skills.

Vice Chair Search Update: Two finalist candidates have been recommended to chair M. Diane McKee and will be interviewing with members of the senior leadership team and Dr. McKee by the end of the month. It’s anticipated that a decision will be forthcoming by early August.

Strategic Planning for Community Health: In the wake of Warren Ferguson and Suzanne Cashman stepping away from their roles as Vice Chair and Director of Community Health, community health strategic planning became a priority as part of the initiative. At the department retreat, faculty from several disciplines and practices contributed to discussions to set an aspirational goal for 2030 and to define measurable objectives for the next few years and immediate next steps for the next year. We anticipate that the new community health leadership will help to define immediate next steps. Final vision articulated at the retreat: In 2030, the DFMCH will engage in integrative partnerships to understand, address, and improve equitable health and wellbeing in our communities.
Five to Seven Ideas /strategies by mid-point to 2030 (next 4 years):
  1. Partner with our community and use clinical information to drive support for initiatives, projects, and grants that apply to all communities we work with.
  2. Define collaboration with our health centers in our department mission.
  3. Department will provide human and financial resources to engage in and measure community-based initiatives.
  4. Lead longitudinal, inter-professional, comprehensive, and engaged training in community health.
  5. Use data to develop trust within our communities as we collaborate in projects.
  6. Increase representation of the FMCH brand.

LGBTQIA+ Health Opportunity
Gina Sullivan from the OB/GYN department is working to develop a Rainbow Clinic (likely virtual to start) at UMassMemorial Health. One of the things that might be most helpful for patients is a more comprehensive directory of providers that not only are LGBTQIA+ friendly, but also that have a specific skill set (hormone therapy, surgical interventions, behavioral health support, etc.). Dr. Sullivan would like to establish what services are being offered. If you have a specific skill set and feel comfortable sharing that information, Dr. Sullivan would appreciate hearing from you as we work to make sure that UMass is truly as inclusive and patient-friendly/accessible as possible. Please email gina.sullivan@umassmemorial.org with your interest and/or clinical expertise.
