This reflects the team’s hard work and commitment to improving the usability and efficiency of Epic, and a major step forward to meet our goals. Great work!

Health Equity and the Well Child Care Visit
- Health Equity in healthcare means that every patient can achieve their full potential of health.
- The American Academy of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics support the prevention of illness from ages 0 to 21 years old.
- Through our Well Child Health Equity Initiative, we are committed to improving the care of all children.
- Key ways to improve well-child visits:
- Remind parents about the importance of visits.
- Evaluate social determinants of health that might impact getting to visits.
- If a child comes for an emergency visit, consider doing the WCC visit at that visit.
- Schedule WCC visits for newborns before leaving the hospital.
- Educate parents about the schedule for WCC visits.

CLINICAL UPDATES
COVID-19 and Health Equity
- In rural America, COVID has hit Black and Hispanic people the hardest. Black and Hispanic people in rural America are 34 percent more likely to die of COVID when compared to whites. Rural areas saw 2.4 times more cases per capita than urban areas.
- Addressing health equity means taking the initiative to eliminate health disparities.
- In alignment with the CDC, we must eliminate barriers to equitable health and health care services.
COVID-19 and US
- The US continues to lead in the number of COVID cases and deaths (93,225,110 cases with 1,055,576 deaths) with recent increases in cases.
- The US continues to have more than twice the cases and deaths of the second-ranked country (India) and the third country (France).
- California and Texas have the most cases. Massachusetts ranks 14 among the States and US territories.
COVID-19 MA
- 1,803,391 cases to date in MA, and 19,898 deaths.
- 7-day percent positivity: 8.09%.
- On July 26, there were 171 patients hospitalized for a COVID-related illness and 616 hospitalized with COVID positive tests. There were 48 patients in the ICU.
COVID-19 UMMMC
- The 7-day positivity rate is 7.3%.
- There are 32 in-house COVID positive cases. Of these cases, 69% are fully vaccinated and 6 patients are in the ICU.
Monkeypox
- WHO has named Monkeypox a global health emergency.
- There are 5,811 cases in the US.
- To date, more than 340,000 doses of vaccine have been given in the US.
- Vaccinations are increasing. Access is improving. However, priority remains those most at risk and any person that has had contact with someone with Monkeypox.
- Both NY and California governors have declared a state of emergency over Monkeypox.
- There are 134 cases in MA compared to 1390 cases in NY and 827 cases in California.
- Signs and Symptoms of Monkeypox:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches and backache
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Exhaustion
- Respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)
- A rash that may be located on or near the genitals (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.
- The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing.
- The rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.
- Symptoms vary, some people may get the rash first.
- If you have a new unexplained rash, isolate yourself.
- Prevention
- Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like Monkeypox.
- Do not touch the rash or scabs of a person with Monkeypox.
- Do not kiss, hug, cuddle or have sex with someone with Monkeypox.
- Avoid contact with objects and materials that a person with Monkeypox has used.
- Do not share eating utensils or cups with a person with Monkeypox.
- Do not handle or touch the bedding, towels, or clothing of a person with Monkeypox.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially before eating or touching your face and after you use the bathroom.
