FMCSA Changes MCSA-5875, the Medical Examiner Report Form

FMCSA reported that they would be changing the MCSA-5875 Medical Examiner Report Form (MER). The revision removes the requirement for drivers to identify themselves as a specific gender by simply removing the question.

TeamCME has been waiting to send a newsletter until we received confirmation from FMCSA administration regarding questions that arise in conjunction with the production of a new Medical Examiner Report Form (MER). Namely, "As the old MER form doesn't expire until November 30, 2021, can MEs continue to use this version until then?"

Upon our communication with FMCSA earlier today, the only information we have received is that they "are working on a message to all MEs that should go out this week and will answer all of these questions".

This revision was set to become effective September 7, 2021 barring any other amendments beforehand. However, FMCSA has already updated their website, making the new form the one that is downloadable.

There has never been any mention of its mandatory use from the effective date.

Some businesses have made statements without any known confirmation from FMCSA. J.J. Keller produced the following:

"Our current form can be used until September 7th, but cannot be used after that time. Revised forms will be shipping August 16, 2021. Medical Examiners can use the revised form prior to September 7th. However, they MUST use the revised form on and after September 7, 2021.

As always, there are two ways you can access the MCSA-5875 form from the TeamCME website:

  • Scroll to the bottom of almost any page to find the link under the "CDL Physicals" column
  • Or, login to the TeamCME Member Center, click on Member Resources, and click on the top link within the FMCSA tab.
