Share Your Vaping and Tobacco Prevention Activities with @AlabamaFocus

FOCUS is partnering with the American Lung Association to promote the "End the Youth Vaping Epidemic".  The American Lung Association's initiative to end the youth vaping epidemic launched on September 1, 2020, with an integrated, multicomponent approach to support parents, schools and students. 


Awareness Campaign-#DoTheVapeTalk is a youth vaping prevention campaign to provide parents with a simple roadmap to address the dangers of vaping. The campaign offers free educational resources including a conversation guide on the website, TalkAboutVaping.org

World AIDS Day is a global movement to unite people in the fight against HIV and AIDS.


Since 1988, communities have stood together on World AIDS Day to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma and to remember lives lost.


World AIDS Day exists to shine a light on the real experiences of people living with HIV today, while celebrating the strength, resilience and diversity of the communities most affected. It is a moment to inspire the leadership needed to create a future where HIV doesn’t stand in the way of anyone’s life.

"Bow Tie Tuesday" Started in Texas

by a former AL FOCUS Member!

We are pleased to introduce our November Alumnus of the Month, Tavoris Hall! It was great catching up with Tavoris, who graduated from Jacksonville High School in 2010, and

Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in 2015. While in college, he joined the Army National Guard and earned his degree in Elementary Education.


Tavoris has achieved great success as an educator, and he still recalls how FOCUS

impacted his life in such a positive way by instilling values such as respect, accountability, and responsible decision making. In turn, his goal is to impact his students in the same

way. As a fourth grade teacher in Dallas, Texas, he strives to instill positivity within his classroom. Tavoris reminds young people to “be kind to yourself and other people because when you put out good energy in this world, it’s going to come back to you.”


Maya Angelou’s famous words, “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” is a quote that Tavoris lives by daily. Tavoris became a teacher because “I had some great teachers in my life who impacted me for the better. I want to be that teacher who impacts students in a positive way inside and outside of the classroom.”


Tavoris is most definitely impacting his students in a positive way by making them feel special. In fact, it has something to do with his weekly attire. Every Tuesday he wears a tie, and a student asked if he was going to church after work. Mr. Hall explained that a man wears bow ties to work, church, dates, dinner or interviews. His inquisitive students seemed interested, so he asked how many of them would wear a bow tie if he bought one for them. They all eagerly raised their hands, so he made the purchase. The rest is history, and now Mr. Hall’s students love wearing them every Bow Tie Tuesday!


Congratulations, Tavoris! We appreciate your service to our country and your continued

dedication to young people. We know you will continue to Make A Difference!

New! 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline!

988 is now the active phone number that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This shorter number is easier to remember, and it provides free and confidential support for anyone in distress.
 
Be sure to share this updated information with staff and students in your school and community. Let everyone know that when they call, text or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors who will listen and help, 24/7. They will even assist you if you know of someone who is in distress. This can be reassuring when you are trying to assist a student or peer and need professional help.
 
*The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-TALK) will always remain available for people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.

We are proud to provide resources and presenters again this semester, on a bi-monthly basis, to New Directions Pell City High School. In partnership with the Addiction Prevention Coalition (APC), topics include Relationships Building, Stress Management, Dealing with Anxiety, and Discovering Your Purpose.

We encourage all FOCUS schools to engage in at least one health observance activity each month. Each month has some excellent choices for students on your campuses to “Make a Difference” and to encourage their peers to participate.
