Check out the 2024 FOCUS Rally Video!

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to enjoy and support the 2024 FOCUS Rally. We could not have had such a successful event without the help of our students, teachers, staff, facilitators, volunteers, partners, and especially our generous sponsors Addiction Prevention CoalitionBlue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. We can't wait to see you next year!

Addiction Prevention Coalition is collecting cards filled with messages of hope and well wishes to help brighten the holidays. The cards will be distributed to people at treatment centers and sober living facilities who can't be with their families during the holiday season.

You can deliver or mail your cards to Addiction Prevention Coalition at 105 Vulcan Road, Suite 332, Birmingham, AL 35209.

Nominations are now open for FOCUS Student of the Month!

Students are Making A Difference each day in your schools, and we would love to feature one each month in our newsletter. If you wish to nominate a student, then please email amymccreless@thefocusprogram.com. We will need the following information to share:

  • Name of student, school and grade level
  • Picture of student
  • Why they stand out as a FOCUS leader in your school
  • Hobbies or interests
  • Include a quote in which they explain what they love most about FOCUS, how it has made an impact in their life or their goal as a FOCUS member

Two of our most celebrated holidays, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, can be the most deadly. Since 1981, every President has declared December as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. As your students plan their prevention efforts, we hope these resources will be helpful.

  • Toyota’s Teen Drive 365 website contains activities, interactives, quizzes, videos and virtual field trips.
  • Another resource, Crash Science in the Classroom, has students explore how different distractions affect the time it takes to complete a numbered finger maze and how driving while distracted can be minimized. The website contains everything you need for your lesson.

FOCUS Co-Founder Available to Train Your Students

Tom Robertson, the co-founder of FOCUS, is one of the most beloved and engaging youth speakers. With his years of expertise working with young people and the Alabama Department of Public Health, he will bring wisdom and insight to your students while making learning fun.

Mr. Robertson can speak on a variety of topics, but he will first train your students in how to conduct focus groups for meaningful student-led prevention. Your students will explore topics and ideas, share ideas, discuss and debate. If you wish to book him, then please contact suejones@thefocusprogram.com.

Alumnus of the Month

December is here, and the season of giving is upon us. As we consider what to give others, our Alumnus of the Month, Reese Hines, encourages us to give from the heart all throughout the year. Reese has been doing just that, and we know you’re going to love her story!

Reese attended Jacksonville High School where she served as a Peer Helper. She loved the principle of being there for others, so she was happy to find her niche in FOCUS. She recalls, “FOCUS was helpful to me because I could find my own way to connect with those around me in a positive light. FOCUS taught me that you can become friends with people you never imagined. You have to dig deeper so that you can find people that are a good representation of you and what you value.”

While serving as a leader in FOCUS, she was gifted a bag of tiny ducks. Reese did not know what to do with them, so she secretly slipped them onto people’s desks and quietly observed. She saw that the reactions were positive, so she began placing them where people in other grades would find them. Eventually she was leaving tiny ducks all around campus. Not only were students finding the ducks, but so were teachers, administrators and staff members. The duck hunt was catching on, and Reese loved seeing smiles and joyful reactions.

After high school, Reese began studying at Jacksonville State University, majoring in nursing. Her classes are rigorous, but she makes it a priority to continue her duck project. She has learned, through social media, that the ducks are helping people at the university. Here are some of the anonymous messages she has received:

“To the duck girl…I hope you have a great day. I haven’t found a duck yet, but I know if I do my day and week will be so much better. Thank you for spreading happiness on campus. You never know what people are going through.”

“Dear Duck Girl…went on a hunt and found some. It did in fact make my day. Thank you!”

Reese Hines, we are so proud of you, and we love seeing how you are giving back and Making A Difference! You continue to be a beacon of happiness wherever you go, and the world needs this now more than ever.

Positivity is spreading on social media as students find ducks!

National Handwashing Week is observed in the first week in December and is dedicated to helping people remain healthy through washing their hands. Good hand hygiene on a daily basis is a simple yet effective way to prevent infections and the spread of germs.

"CDC launched Life is Better with Clean Hands, a new national campaign designed to motivate adults to make clean hands part of their daily lives. The campaign resources below are designed to help raise awareness about the importance of handwashing at key times in both homes and public settings, such as before cooking or after using the bathroom."

Hewitt-Trussville High School FOCUS is gearing up to encourage Paine Elementary students to wash their hands often using correct handwashing techniques. With flu season approaching, the fall and winter is an excellent time to share this important information. Contact dana.depew@trussvillecityschools.com for more information.
